Sargent and Greenleaf Lock Question

cbxjeffcbxjeff Member Posts: 17,633 ✭✭✭✭

I've been asked to open a gun safe for a friend that is living now very far away. The safe is at his business about an hour from me. He has given me the 3 numbers but I question the procedure he offered. One of my safes has the S&G dial type lock. My procedure is after I spin a couple of times ccw, I turn ccw to the first of my numbers. Then turn cw to the second time I come to my second of my numbers. Then turn ccw to my third number. Finally turn cw which I can feel the mechanical levers & bolts retracting. My question is this the universal method for S&G? My friend's instructions are about the same except for the 3rd number as he says to pass that number twice and stop at the third and that's all.

I just don't think this is correct but I'm frequently wrong. Just ask my wife.

Any input appreciated guys.

I just tried mine. It is on a Browning pro steel. Start with turning to the left several complete turns to make sure everything is clear. Stop on the first number of the combination and then turn to the right until I hit the second combination number for the third time. The back to the left until I hit the third combination number twice then rotate dial to the right until safe unlocks. Mine unlocks between 0-95

Joe has it. At least 4 turns to start. Then 3, then 2 & then one. I have one that stops at zero.

I have two safes with S&G locks. Mine unlock exactly like wolfpack's.

Left several turns and stop on first number, right past the second stopping on the third time, left past the third number stopping on the second. Turn right till it stops, turn locking lug handle, it's open.

Another vote for s& g dial safe locks . Mine is like Wolfpack except at the forth number I have to push in and turn the dial about an inch till it locks . Then It opens . It is an old Mosler secure document safe out of federal office .

Thanks for all the input guys. It looks like the opening proceedure for all S&G locks is not the same. I'll print all these responces and take them with me tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Now I'll throw ya'll a curve. I have a Yale dial lock the works in the reverse. Same # of turns but you start by turning clockwise.

They are full of something we all hold dear Joe. I will make a detailed inventory on an Excel, send him a hard copy, he will mark what he wants to keep, and then I call Kasey. Well that's reassuring Toolman. To make matters worse we got about an inch or more of snow last night. That will make my road trip more interesting.

I didn't need that bullshot! I spent 2 hours trying to open this sob with no luck. It looks like different S&G models have different procedures. I've called my pal but he is confused and couldn't help. I'm sure I have the correct 3 numbers but don't know the procedure. I'll call S&G Monday and see what they say.

Well dang it. Do you have a serial number you can give S&G to help eliminate the try this way, then try this way,,,,,,,

That would be ideal joe but my pal in FL is in poor shape and I'll never be able to get any documentation. Another option would to get a locksmith to come out as I'm sure I have the correct numbers. I can't do that without my pal's OK though. I'll keep working on this but am getting discouraged.

S&G locks can be a pita. While turning it, keep a little constant pressure in, towards the door face. And, maintain continuous, positive movement without letting the dial jiggle in between final stops. More than once I've had to use both hands to keep the dial rotating smoothly between stops.

    Best of luck to you

One of my safes even with the correct numbers it's finicky if the door has to much pressure or the dead bolts are not home it is a pita

I have to make sure to turn the handle all the way to the right and make sure the door is sorta neutral or it will not release the locking bolts .

99% it works fine but that 1% of time not so much lol
