My router is about 5 years old and never has been a problem until a couple of weeks ago. Now I find that I will lose internet connection whether I'm actively using the laptop or if it's just sitting idle. The only way I can regain my connection is to disconnect the 110 power from the router, wait, and plug it back in. I can't do it by just using my keyboard before the power disconnect. I should mention that there are two laptops using this router and both use access. Any ideas guys?

Try the paperclip reset. (paperclip in the small reset hole for a couple of seconds)
If this is only happening to the laptop, it might be the operating system controlling the power. There are many U tube videos on resetting the operating system to not turn off the laptop power.

A router five years old might be dying. It certainly isn't up to the latest security standards. I'd replace it.
It might be as simple as making sure your router is up to date;

Metronet is my ISP and they supply the router. They replaced it once or twice over the years. If you have an ISP maybe their tech people could help?
A wal-mart idiot sold me a hub instead of a router way back when. The tech support from the manufacturer actually returned a call to me about the trouble I was having.
Routers are notoriously under cooled and it's not long before their parts just stop working regularly.

Well guys, I tried and failed to do a firmware update. I got frustrated and thought it's better for my mental health to just buy a new one. Looking back, my router is well over 5 years old and thought that is the best move. Thanks all for your input.

Looks good so far Joe. I bought another Netgear. I did some more checking and my old one was about 10 years old. Anymore. not much lasts for 10 years.

Netgear is good, and I used them for years. My current one is a TP-Link, and it replaces an identical one that failed after a year. I didn't even bother with trying to deal with warranty issues because they're so cheap. I do like the TP-Link one.
Good to hear. I also run a Netgear- Nighthawk. It's only a couple yrs. old and has been great. In fact it cleared up all the issues we were having prior to buying it. Very happy with it.
Home routers have almost zero chance of being hacked, but it is still wise to keep up with security advancements. Besides, they change the protocols often enough that you don't get decent bandwidth -or any - unless you upgrade the router. You can find wifi routers for as little as $79 up to $15 grand. Shoot for a name brand in the $150 range and you'll get all you can use at home.
