oops!
Always put a scrap under hammer head for leverage when pulling a nail when in doubt. ME's know that.😀 ----------Ray
PS: Looks new, ask for replacement or refund.
Fiberglass handles.
I had plenty of leverage.
And yes it's brand new. Like I said "2nd board in"

The easy way to not have that happen is to not bend the nail in the first place, rookie!
Wonder Bars have saved many a hammer handle.
Too much carpal tunnel to keep the hammer swinging straight these days.

Never was a carpenter.. reason to buy a nail gun
Nothing like an Estwing.
Made in China? Can't be good old USA hickory.------------Ray
Funny you say that because the first thing I did before using it was pull the enormous "MADE IN THE USA" label off the base of the handle.
Here is it and its replacement:

The reason I got this was because my 28 Oz Estwing is just too much for the old arm any more :(

By golly the head was made in USA. Maybe that handle was imported from China.------Ray

Buy a cat claw, or flat bar, or crow bar.
Or do NOT bend the nails! 😁 Jk
I have all the above. It does seem that if you're going to put a nail puller on the hammer, the handle should be able to take it.🤕

I've got a Vaughn 999 20?oz hammer with a fiberglass handle that I bought in 1981 when I got my first job in construction. It's still pounding nails to this day (but it's experienced enough that it doesn't bend them).
They're good hammers, you must have just gotten the one in a million with a bad handle. Did you buy a new handle for it?
I have one of those 9.99 kobalt lowes hammers. I ran over the first one with the truck. Was in lowes with my carpenter and he said, watch this... took the thing up to the counter and had another new one... they just threw it in a basket full of other tools that had broken. It is now in my truck in the toolbox. He used this massive hammer and could drive a sixteen d nail easily.
Every so often I oil all my tools with wooded handles, especially axe and hammer handles. The hickory dries out and gets brittle.
That's unbelievable. I have hammered many hundreds of pounds of nails with the 28 oz. Vaughn, we call it a "California Framing Hammer." Never had one break. Plus they have great balance and feel good in your hand, compared to those all metal hammers.
You must have gotten one with a flawed handle. Weird.
Looks to me that you eat waaayyy to much spinach! Try not to break the new one muscles.😁 Bob
No. Just bought another Vaughan (see above).

I guess it's possible it dried out on the shelf in the store. Seems unlikely though.

Should have skipped the second board. Don
hard to do better than the all steel handle and head one piece like craftsman or eastwing
I have broken way more than my share of wooden handle hammers
like every thing a bad one will pop up some times it just frustrating when your the one that gets the bad one
when younger I worked construction at the time I could not get in any union trades they were only taking minorities to please the government ( total BS )
but I did get in the labor union ( some people had connections that helped me ) funny part I was allowed by rules to carry a hammer, but it had to be a curved claw ( to pull nails ) a straight claw was forbidden for a labor to carry 😁
but that's all I ever carried, any way . over the 13 yrs I worked it only one old carpenter called me out on it . some job sites they thought I was a carpenter any way and wondered why the labors were not mad at me for using a shovel go figure LOL
Wow, and it's a Vaughan. I have a 22 oz vaughan that goes back to the days working at the truss plant 15 yrs ago. Still a darn good hammer. You're just too tuff on stuff. @Mr. Perfect
Mr. P, Grandpa made me the bent nail extractor when I was a youngster. Closest nail keg at the General Store was about four miles away and it was quicker to re-condition those bent nails. The deep driven ones i got out with a cats paw. Then Grandpa sit me down next to a big flat rock and i rolled those bent nails and pounded them straight again. I miss Grandpa.-------------Ray
The strength lies in the sticker. Leave the new one on.
Or you could just get a palm nailer and earmuffs. Like a hand held jackhammer with a magnetic sleeve to hold the nail. Handiest thing.
just one more thought
I have never used one the the wonder hammers that came out over the last twenty years ( I still only use the metal handle I am just too rough on wood handled hammers, but I use them for unintended purposes also
however my was a carpenter ( RIP dad I sure miss you ) and along with him and countless more in the carpenter trade They all used wooden handled hammers , the wood help absorb shock and made it a bit easier on their arm and wrist . after countless thousands of nails hammered in any little bit of good added up quick
Did you also do an involuntary somersault when it broke? I won't go into details, but I'm glad nobody has a smartphone around any time I get behind a hammer.
"an involuntary somersault"
This sounds like a story that needs to be told!
I've done that before too. I have a good cats paw, just wasn't using it. These nails weren't that deep or anything. Just a bad handle. The replacement is doing well.

I see they shaved an ounce off the new one for you. That is customer service. I guess both our 9 pound hammer days are over. I still have one though.
Yep. I appreciated that from them. Nice guys.
