My Bride and I were in a nearby city finishing off a little Christmas shopping. As we left town there was a poor guy walking back up the medium along the interstate. As we got closer, there was his 60" flat screen on the side of the road. The box of all torn off and the rest was pretty battered.
He was a young guy....I guess he either didn't have it tied down or not tied down well enough. I hope he bought it at Best Buy and got the service agreement as he would be able to get another one.....
I felt really bad for the guy....

Dang, them aren't cheap either
sorry about his misfortune . sucked to be him I am sure he just screwed Christmas for the family or at least himself
True story way back when big screen TV were just getting popular and truly were big ticket $$ items
a co worker who knew better bought one had the place load in the truck for him and away he went up the interstate
of course it happened .
he said the wind caught it DA ... and flipped it still in the box on to the highway his son was with him also .
he said he about crapped his paints, but it all stayed in the box . so him and his son loaded back in his truck
he went back to what ever store it was (I do not remember it was one of the big chain electronic stores ) he bought it and said we got home started to unload it but sounds like something in the box is broke
so they gave him another one .
said all he could think of was explain to his wife he screw up and busted a brand new big $ TV out of stupidity
and yes he said, him and his son tied and strapped down the 2nd one no way was it going any where
dis honest sure was, saved his butt form a major piece being taken out by his with oh yes ,
dang lucky the store was so helpful and took his story as true
I am amazed at what can fly or slide out of a truck when not secured.
Right out the back: 25 2x4's, a brand new battery, a treadmill
Flew out of the bed: an electric kitchen stove, a fullsize wooden doghouse
Slide from its trailer: a pontoon boat, yep, right in the middle of town on a major highway
None of these were mine!
An Assistant State's Attorney I worked with many years ago ran to a nearby city and bought a new recliner and loaded it up in the back of his truck. He was a young guy, fresh out of Law School and obviously from a sheltered background. He came into my office the next day and was pretty unhappy.
I asked what was going on. He said I picked up a new recliner and put it in the bed of my pick up and took off. He said he was cruising about 70 and there was a bump and then he saw the recliner lift out of the bed and hit pavement. I asked what he did next, he said it spattered all over the shoulder and into the ditch.....I just kept going
He said he never thought it would have needed to be tied down....Lesson learned !
Bad time to learn how to tie a good knot.
He has my sympathy. Glad no one got hurt...it's just a TV. Lesson learned (hopefully).
And that is why when I was riding a motorcycle I always dropped way back from a pickup. I have seen ladders, mattresses, and other things blow out of a pickup. I once watched a wrecker detach a car being towed at 45 mph on a four-lane road. No safety chains, the wrecker hit a bump the car came loose crossed two lanes of traffic and rammed into the front of a bar. I was in a pickup just behind the wrecker.
i can give you a really bad day. It has been quite a few years back we had friends who loved to go to the mountains fishing/drinking. One of the guys had lost his legs to diabetes and was in a wheel chair. My cousin , a friend and this fellow we called Bear, the one in the wheelchair had been drinking at a camp few miles down the road from thier own camp. when they decided to leave, they just lifted Bear wheelchair and all into the bed of the pickup closed the tailgate and headed down the road to thier own camp.
Right before they got to camp my cousin looked back in the bed to see if bear was allright and he was GONE!!!!!! The turned around and headed back and found him in the road about a mile back. On one of the twisty parts of the road he had rolled backwards and hit tailgate flipped clean over it and landed in the road. Long story short he lived but was skinned/bruised up for quite a while after.
He had a t-shirt made that showed a stickman in a wheelchair going out the back of a truck bed. and printed in big letter it said " I do my own stunts " he never lost his sense of humor......
I don't feel sorry for the guy. What if it had flown off and hit a car? Or a motorcycle? If the DOT Enforcement had seen that I guarantee they would do a lot more than just commiserate with him. Unsecured loads carry hefty fines, and rightfully so. I always over-secure the load. Chains and ratchet straps are a lot cheaper than lawsuits.
I'm sure everything was fine.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
