YALL.....windshield replacement......nearly $2000 estimated cost! Good grief!

This is nuts, 2020 Highlander.....its a little crack down low in my windshield, so I thought I'd call to see about getting it handled.

Its about 11 inches long, down in the black area that covers the dash area of the windshield.

Because of all of the electronics involved, the keypad on the drivers side, the cameras and all the calibrating charges for all the safety features it is CRAZY expensive.

Its $500 in just calibration charges....the window itself is over$700.

The last windshield I bought was less than $100.

I'm shocked!

That is nuts! Last few I’ve replaced (Safelite home service) we’re covered by insurance, but the invoices were all under $300. Simple glass…no sensors, etc. Hate to think what a bumper replacement would cost. For $2k I’d be keeping my crack.

Some insurance has low or no deductible for glass repair if the crack can be fixed. If not then hopefully your Comprehensive isn’t more than $500. Ours is $1000 and after having to use it to repair a fender I’m considering putting it back to $500.

That's just crazy. But then again anything car repair is $$$.

In Florida there is no deductible for windshields, I've had a couple replaced and it didn't cost a penny.

Yes everything is expensive for cars today.

My wife had an argument with a mailbox and the mailbox won. Now I need a new side mirror, quarter panel and new headlight because I can’t just replace the broken lens in the headlight.

The body guy says we got lucky he found a used side mirror for $250. He said ours with heated mirror, camera and sensors cost $1,800 brand new. He also said he had what I a think was a BMW and the same side mirror was $4,800.

That’s crazy. Too much. Call someone else!

Gotta love these newer cars. Nothing is cheap on em. I just spent over $1,600 on a set of tires. Ugh.

A few months ago a bit of plastic was missing on one of my side mirrors....it was a panel that covered the front part of the arm. You can't just get that bit of plastic, so I had to order an entire side mirror. The shop that did the work said it was easier to just replace the whole thing than to rob the plastic off the new part. I was going to take the plastic and try to sell the remaining parts online or to a body shop. My plan was shot down though.

I told this shop to call my insurance and talk to them about the windsheild. There is no break on windsheilds here. I have USAA....which is good if you ever have a claim, but they tend to be pricey compared to other coverage plans. I've just never heard of anyone having to fight them to get paid for anything, so I keep them. $1000 deductible is hard when it comes to this sort of thing though.

Interesting situation Kasey. If I had an 11-inch crack not in the driving field of view and “hidden” in the black area…I’d be living with the crack until things got worse.

Won't pass inspection in Virginia. But... previous Governor Ralph "Dr. Mengele" Northam fixed it where we can't be pulled over for just an expired inspection sticker. Racial profiling, don't ya know.

My current daily driver went four months after the sticker ran out while I was waiting on the tires I wanted.

My only worry is that I would have problems with it while I'm on the road picking up guns. So, I'm not taking any chances.

Can you imagine having my windsheild break or water get into some electronic nonsense, leaving me stranded while I've got a car load of guns? I can see the headlines now.....they'd set up a perimiter around me, live action news breaking in to update you on the "situation". What a nightmare!
