A ton of feathers or a ton of coal?

Technically, the ton of coal, because (as @Don McManus pointed out in the last thread on water weight) as the distance of the center of mass moves away from the center of mass of the earth, its weight decreases in proportion to the distance. And since the pile of feathers is going to be quite large to equal one ton (as compared to the pile of coal), its center of mass will be further from the earth and therefore weigh less.

Had a neighbor kid that wasn't the brightest bulb on the tree, argue with me that a pound of bricks was heavier than a pound of feathers.....
Surprised that he had made it to 16 years old....
Since the same applies, he was correct.

But............if the feathers were packed tight enough........?????? 🤯😛
And, if I told people the feathers were actually bricks and stuck to that point of view no matter how much evidence to the contrary was presented, would feathers and bricks have equality and would that potential equality equate to equal equalness across all substances that identity as bricks? I think that’s the real question we should be trying to answer.

think it would depend on wether they are lubed or not.........
Trick question. If you put them each in a gallon jug, they will both weigh 8.3 pounds.
Your neighbor kid is probably in politics now toad67.
See what you started, Joe!
The feathers would have to self identify as bricks. You telling someone would make no difference.

If a ton of coal weighs more than a ton of feathers, what is the air speed velocity of an unladen sparrow?.....
🤡
Yes.
Funny!! After I ate a ton of feathers, I gained 3\4's of a ton of body weight.
After eating a ton of coal, gained 1.2 tons body weight. I guess the coal must weigh more.
Logic is wasted on the logical.
Thank you, Cliff Clavin.
African or European?

What if the feathers identify as coal?
There should be a govt. grant to study this,,

Looking for extra income
When visiting the Smithsonian as a child, other than the Air and Space Museum, one of the most memorable displays was two clear plastic tubes mounted on an axle. In one tube was a feather, and if I remember correctly, a coin.
The with the two items at the bottom of their respective tubes, the tube were rotated 180°. The feather floated down, and the coin dropped quickly.
The air was then removed from the two tubes, they were rotated back to their original position and the feather and the coin dropped at exactly the same speed.
From that day forward, I understood that that taking a coin from a Smithsonian exhibit will get you banned for 10 years.

Joe isn't the only one looking for extra income it seems.

Good luck KenK/84Bravo. I tried on a previous similar post and now have given up. You guys are on your own.
if the feathers were still attached to those dodo birds that turned to coal you would have all the money you need for your grant/study. guess you will have to use a million or two of that moderator money to do your study joe.... though I will chip in a piece of coal from the along the roadside if it will help........
Well with all the debate going on, I have to conclude that bull malarkey does actually weigh two thousand pounds to the ton....
How many BTU's in a BUTT the size of a TUB?
He could be POTUS some day.
He is still little brighter than what we got now.
We know his political preference. I can just look at some of them younger ones and know how they are going to vote and not many surprises on the older ones just going by their looks and know then confirm for sure if they say anything.
