Tire Life

JimmyJackJimmyJack Member Posts: 5,489 ✭✭✭✭

Im surprised at the reccomended tire life that most companies have. Probably to sell more tires, but most people go well beyond that date. Good Year says six years. Michelin is ten years. Would be good to know if you are buying used tires I guess, I maintain 38 tires, and couldnt afford to change out at all the dates they suggest.

I have experienced Michelin tire failure at 12 years on my Silverado 2500HD. Never again will I run a tire that long.

7 or eight years is all I will go on any vehicle I take trips in.

Tractor or forklift I run them till the die. But an ATV or a UTV three years and done. I ain't walking 50 miles on backcountry trails back to the truck.

Drive em till they are slick or flat ................ then just be more careful. 😋

I would follow manufacturers recommendations. I have seen to many old tires flat on the side of the road.

8 years is it for me.

I just replaced a set of Michelins on my pickup that were probably 50%+ tread left, but they were 10 years old.The price for a set of Michelins had doubled in that time. The Tundra now has Toyo tires on it.

We recently bought a 2006 pickup with a fancy set of tires (which I found unbearable) on it. The dealer threw in the ORIGINAL tires/rims that have 90%+ tread depth. I checked the tires for any evidence of cracking or weathering(appears they've been stored inside--maybe in a basement). 2000 miles since swapping them back on and no problems at all.

Here in the desert, you are LUCKY to get 5 years on a set of tires. They just don't last beyond that. I run Michelins on most things, and Goodyear on my trailers (I have 13 different trailers!) Neither are worth going after 5 years........just risky, and they WILL fail here.

Batteries are just as bad. If you get 3 years, you are doing GREAT!

I only use Interstate, and have decent luck with them.

I run 10 ply all terrain and get about 60,000 miles. Don't even bother counting years, usually about like Mercury says.
