We called the service man and he came right out. The contactor was closed but no power on the load side. He took the cover off and sure enough, an earwig has crawled ibetween the contacts.
Not a hornet, not a yellow jacket, not a wasp.
A goll darned earwig!
Cost me $66 for a service call.

As the house finch said, "Cheap, cheap cheap!"
Very reasonable, for an very honest service call. He could've really soaked you. Call and thank him again.
Hey Jim.......
These days........$66 is........like.........................FREE!!! 😎
My air is on the blink . Contropl board has three diodes going bad. Circuit board is turning brown from overheat .Picked one up from dealer today for 45 bucks. Warranty will reimburse me the cost except the labor
I have found fire ants in contactors several times.A few blast of contact cleaner usually fixes the problem.
Jim, you're an electrician and you called somebody to come and check out your AC?
Over the years........I've had to refurbished/repair two of my 5 ton geothermal control circuit boards, due to lousy fuse holders. One had just caught fire when I got to it...........very lucky.
Having a spare control circuit board can come in mighty handy........like capacitors and contactors. If you can get your old circuit board back, I may be able to help you.
Give me a holler.
A good insecticide is always nice to have around air conditioners and well houses. Ants, spiders, and any number of bugs will cause problems. I can guarantee that there are no crawlies in or around my outside equipment. We live in SW Arkansas, and I spray Bifen/IT at least three times a year all the way around out place. No wasp, dirt daubers, spiders, and a lot less mosquitoes to be found.
The call I get every fall for heaters. Spiders love to build webs in the spud orifice's on the gas bar, preventing the flame to ignite. A simple cleaning with a rag on all the orifice's, will save you a ton in service calls. Spray down your contactors and components every spring, will also help. The other call I get is, My air is not working like it use too. Check your filters and replace them a few times a year. A dirty filter with stop the ac from working properly. Most people that have some common sense, can fix their stuff without calling someone. From now on, if you guys have an issue, contact me and I will see if I can diagnose it over the phone for you. Most times it is something simple. I enjoy helping people out when I can. Oakie
I was busy with something else and had wife, daughter and sick great granddaughter sweating and fussing.
I have fixed several electrical problems with my AC over the years. Saved a bunch of money.
