Remember your first time hunting??

OakieOakie Member Posts: 40,510 ✭✭✭✭

I have a picture of myself at 5 years old, holding a bow, while my dad took me hunting. I took my son to that same spot when he was 5, and took a picture of him holding my muzzle loader. I found his picture and will have to look for mine.

My first actual hunt, was when I turned 10, right as small game season started. We hunted an old horse far, with 300 acres of fields, woods and ponds. That farm is still there today, amazingly. The first thing I harvested was a Rabbit. Later in the day, I got a squirrel, and then a Pheasant. As the season wore on, My dad said he would let me take a couple days off to go to deer camp, if I got good grades. I worked my butt off, got two days off, only to see nothing but small deer all day. This was the start of a lifelong passion. My true love is Archery hunting and Muzzle loader. I really don't do much shotgun hunting anymore. I occasionally go up to PA for Rifle season, but only hunt with a handgun, My Smith and Wesson 657 41 magnum. That handgun has taken quite a few bucks over the years.

What was your first hunt and true passion in the sport????

I was about 12 when I was allowed to take grandpa's single shot shotgun squirrel hunting. They only gave me one shell. I bagged a fox squirrel and grandma showed me how to skin and cook it. I remember spitting #6 shot as I ate the squirrel.

Every hunt should be that exciting.

My neighbor took me pheasant hunting on his land the first time when I was 10. I was using JC Higgins single shot 20 gauge. I remember being pretty excited and hardly slept the night before. I shot a rabbit with the first shot of the day. After a dozen or more misses, I got my first pheasant. We had a great wild game supper that night !

I was hooked from that day forward.

When I got old enough to hunt on my own, I used to be out almost every day after school during pheasant season. I remember shooting one or two most nights and cooking them up for supper. I never got sick of eating them..

I started bow hunting when I was 13 after I received a Bear Bearcat bow for my birthday. I shot a lot of rabbits and squirrels with that old bow. We used flu flu arrows and hunted pheasants from time to time. LOTS of shots.. Only a few hits but it was a lot of fun. That bow is sitting in the corner of my Man Cave almost 52 years old...

My true passion is whitetail hunting. I have taken them with slug guns, rifles, handgun, bow and hopefully this year with a crossbow..

Since retiring I enjoy squirrel hunting with handguns and bow. I also do a little yote hunting from time to time. A new season I look forward to now is Dove season.

I had a 410 Ithaca single my dad had bought for 8.00 a few years earlier And had with us I laid clamps when he brought it home lol

Any way We walked about 50 yards off the back porch into the woods looking for a squirrel or two

I was just a young boy...white tail hunting with my Dad and my Grandfather in the snow of upstate New York. I kinda took those days for granted as a kid...now as an adult im so glad he did....those are some of the best memories of my life.

I think I'll be taking my son out for his first deer hunt this year or next.
