National Navajo Code Talkers Day

August 14 is the date for National Navajo Code Talkers Day because it marks the anniversary of the first use of the Navajo code in combat. On August 14, 1942, the Navajo Code Talkers participated in their first mission during the Battle of Guadalcanal, one of the most important campaigns of World War II.
The Navajo code proved to be fast, reliable, and secure, and helped the US Marines gain a decisive victory over the Japanese forces. The Navajo code was also used in every major operation involving the US Marines in the Pacific theater until the end of the war.

Super, super secret at the time. The Navajos couldn't even tell their families how or where they were working.
The Navy went through quite a few of the hardest, least-used languages like Catalan, Basque, Hungarian, and Welsh, but learned that all could be translated with more or less ease. And then somebody brilliantly suggested Native American. If Navajo had ever been broken, they could cycle through all kinds of others, all different.
I honestly never heard of the code talkers, until the movie came out. We were never taught this in school or anywhere else. I didn't realize how much they gave to our country, and the sacrifices they made. Especially after how we treated them over the years. What kind of human being, would sacrifice everything, for a nation that treated them so bad. Pride?? Love of their land, Honor??? I rightly don't know, but I'm sure glad they did and they surely deserve to be recognized for it!! Just my feelings. Amazing people. Oakie
It was code within a code: they were speaking Navajo but used code words within the language so that someone who spoke the language wouldn't understand it all.....
Without code, the Dinee dialect of Athabascan is said to be one of the most difficult languages to learn. A close friend and hunting partner was Dinee. We hunted using his peoples traditions. In over 30 years I managed to learn a handful of words. I know, slow learner.
Like most i had not heard of them untill I watched the movie ..
Just. As stated what a great idea and brave people to do so
Aybe just a bit more All were brave but what they did for a country that had turned their back on them is truly patriotic
They all have my respect
the 1st movie i remember that had the code talkers was "Battle Cry", James Whitmore, Aldo Ray, Tab Hunter and a host of other upcoming stars. this movie was made in the 60s i believe.
The Dinee -Navajo- and most other Native Americans have been disproportionaly represented in the US military since WWI You would not guess that, but they consider they are protecting their homeland.
Navajo code communications had a part in "Never So Few"......one of my favorite war movies. Seems that Charles Bronson got into a "discussion" with Dean Jones about the language. 😎
Great movie........not to mention the many stars from my younger years. Heck.......any movie that has Gina Lollobrigida in it......HAS to be worth watching......and watching....and....!!🤪🥰
