Is it for gun tinkering/gunsmithing?
Mine is very similar for gunsmith tinkering another Bench for reloading.
I have set of padded jaws I add to my vise and a pad that covers the vise screw in the middle of the vise. Have a crane armed magnifying glass light on the left hand corner, can move it out of the way when not needed, but it stays attached to the workbench readily available. Something really handy is a little PANAVISE that has plastic jaws that is on a heavy metal base and I can just set it on the bench to hold for example a gun bolt, then just lift the Panavise off the bench when not need. The head on most Panavises can be moved different directions and at several different angles to hold small items. Really handy if you are a tinkerer.
The padded bench cover you have is a very good idea.
I also have a small metal cookie pan about 12x14 with 1/2 inch high sides I can use for when taking apart small items. Parts can be easily seen and will not roll away or evaporate.
Noticed the rear of bench has expanded metal. Might think about adding screen wire to the front of that expanded metal; would help catch/deflect them small flying parts that go into orbit that you here them hit but not quite sure which direction sure the noise came from so get out the big magnet and drag it around on the floor, but be careful where you step if it was a little spring. Check bottom of your shoes every once in awhile.
Guns? Don
What is the surface made of???? Are you going to reload on it??? If so, I would flush mount a steel plate, for your reloader. I put several different holes in my plate, for different devices, such as different reloaders, a vice and a powder dispenser. This way , they are easy to exchange out when working on different projects. This is a top view of the plate I installed. I routered it into a counter top, I bought at Home depot. I wanted a clean flat surface, so I could sweep powder off of it. Now I use a small hand held vac for that. I wanted everything even with the surface, so I don't scratch any stocks with sharp edges sticking up. I also made a cover plate to go over the steel plate. Your bench looks awesome. Oak
Very nice. I built mine back in the '70's when I was poorer than I am now. I've spent a lot of time over that bench.
You must be missing something, I cant see the top of mine?
The surface is a rubber horse mat from Rural King. Heavier than we need.
The original plan was for this to sit outside and be heavy enough to be cattle proof. Now it will go inside the container. The idea was to have a rack and work area.
Want a good area to set guns for a day of shooting that wouldn't take away from the 2 picnic tables we use for shooting benches.
A guy comes out of Chicagoland to shoot. He'd bring enough guns to make a day of it. He uses typical gun show folding wood racks. After going to Knob Creek, I thought a proper bench and rack would be cool. If you take out 7 to 10 guns with you, there's a place to rack them when not in use.
It also burns my rear to load up and forget Allen wrenches or screw driver. Keep basic tools there and a Harbor Freight spotting scope... Tripod, so I just have to load up guns and bullets and cooler....
My cousin plans on rolling in with a camper to this area so this can supplement the camping space.... Fire pit too.
Back in the mid-1970's this poor boy got his little bench from KMart......on the Blue Light Special(I think). It's was 2'x4'.....complete with particle board top.
After four moves, across the country and back, it's still going strong. At this point in life......it's like "a part of me".😉
I'll always enjoy it.........
Okay, so now we know what it is going to be used for and not for reloading. The bench is absolutely awesome, to say the least. The only concern I have, are those bolts sticking through to hold the guns. They definitely need to be covered with something, to protect stocks and steel. AH, just got an idea. 3/8 clear condensate tubing. You can get it at any hardware/big box store. They make it in any size, to slip over the bolts!!! If you can't find any, I have boxes of it in 3/8, and can send it to you free of charge. Oakie
Yep the 6 guys your going to need to move it. 😁
