Handgun target set up completed.

asopasop Member Posts: 8,977 ✭✭✭✭

The grandkids love to shoot my handguns. Decided to put something together that they could shoot at in the basement. Used a 24" X 36" X 1/4" plate, 26" X 20" X 9" heavy sheet metal box, 2 X 8 side & front frames set outside of the sheet metal box, with 2" X 2" pieces holding the front of the plate (plate set at maybe a 45 degree angle) and then 2"-3" of sand. Set the thing on a piece of plywood on an old "Wood Matte 200" work table! Had to add light ga. metal plate & angles in various places to prevent the lead from collapsing my ingenious set up!? At any rate it is now working well after the required tweaking😏

Shooting lead bullets indoors can result in lead exposure.

What could go wrong? Seriously ? Lead exposure at minimum, likely serious injury to ricochet

The build, the idea is great. I personally don't like the application.

Ventilation will be an issue... cleaning up lead will be an issue...

I am trying not to be a downer about this as it is something I have tried to figure out how to do the same thing. An indoor range I used to shoot at frequently starting having issues with fired bullets coming back. I caught a .38 Spc. in the chest. It felt like someone thumped me with a finger. Not hard enough to do anything but I felt it...

That was the last time I shot there until after they had redone the bullet traps and plates....

I hope you figure out the safest way to use your new range....

What caliber are you shooting? I've set up a 22cal airgun trap that uses 40 pounds of rubber mulch and a plastic bin. As a failsafe, I backed it with a large piece of steel but the reality is that nothing gets thru the bin, even at 900fps.

I don't know if I'd recommend that setup for a 22lr but if that's what you're shooting, it would make a great way to slow a projectile before hitting the back of the trap you made.

I can't wait to see the pictures. Sound really cool.

When the kids were young, Donna and I would put them to bed, then head down to the basement to shoot the 22's. I had several 2x6 boards as a backstop. DON'T DO THIS. LOL. They went right through and eroded the cinderblocks behind them.

I mounted an exhaust fan in the basement window where we shoot from. I was also concerned about the bi-products. I've tried MANY times to post photos. But then I still carry a "flip phone"🤔
