.400 Legend

I've heard rumors that cartridges were supposed to be ready last July and that rifles were to be available by fall. I have not read anything in the gun magazines. Anybody have any definite info on this? I'd own one for deer season if I could.

flop ??
The ammo is listed here on the auction side but I didn't see any rifles listed yet.
From Wikipedia:
"It is designed for deer hunting out to a maximum effective range of 300 yards (270 m)."
Yeah, with an 18 inch hold over.
I really can't imagine the need for a 40 caliber rifle bullet in the deer woods. Possibly in an area where hogs/bear are also on the hunting list?
Dunham's store near me has a shelf full of ammo. Don't recall the brand, but they were proud of them at nearly 60 bucks a box.
I'll stick with my 450 bushmaster.
If you need go with the 350 Legend. My FFL has been selling dozens of them since straight wall rifles can now be used for deer. Low recoil I am told and 200 in for yardage. Plenty of ammo. Just the gunshop talk, I have neither.
At our deer camp, several bucks have been taken with the .450 Bushmaster and the .350 Legend (as well as rifles in .44 magnum) since straight wall rifle cartridges have been made legal here. I would like to add the .400 Legend to the mix.
Well, a dealer at the gun show last Saturday had a Savage Axis in .400. I thought $470 including 2 boxes of cartridges was an OK deal. It's the only .400 rifle I've seen for sale and the only one he had. So once I get it set up with a scope, I'll see how it shoots. The big on-line store sent me a set of dies and I've got a bunch of 10mm bullets so I'll try to file a range report.
Was there a need for a .400? Figure there was a 350 and 450 already.
I would just under load a 45-70. Yes I'm cheap. Save the cash from buying a whole new rig and bits.

My Iowa resident Cousin doesn't agree. He bought a pair of Savage AXIS 350 Legend rifles for himself and his Daughter. Told me by the time he blasted almost 40 rounds zeroing the el-cheapo scopes he used(turns out he could have spent another $50 per scope for same price as cost of wasted ammo!!), his shoulder had taken quite a beating. He also claimed that trajectory was similar to 20 sabot slugs.
Seems that the 'advantages' are slim.
Well i hope you enjoy your newest addition. Start a new thread with your range report, Maybe in the General discussion forum where you can have more comments.
