I have not done it but I have "heard" that you can contact CMP and see if that serial number has been through. To find an unissued Garand to me imo is like finding a 100 million dollar lottery ticket. About same chances, IMO ONLY.

unissued? I call b/s or a totally un-informed owner who believes a tall tale told by whomever owned it before.

anyone who might own a truly unissued Grand would either have a lot of supporting documentation , or are in possession of a rifle that left the factory by the back door. JMHO🙄

All you have to do is phone CMP, & they will tell you if a specific gun was sold by them. If it was, they will sell you a letter stating that fact.

CMP has only sold truly new M1's at auction, complete with original cardboard carton & packaging inserts. It's unlikely others will be found.

CMP has sold several thousand "collector grade" M1's, many of which may never have been issued but are in new condition.

Another category of "new" M1's are "trophies" given by the military services to winners of military competitions.
