Range Report - S&W Model 544 - TWT and Girsan/EAA MC14T

Went to the Louis Whittacre Range in the Osceola National Forest with a friend that has shot competition - including Camp Perry - and still shoots some competition in Florida and Georgia. The Texas Wagon Train Commemorative is a Smith & Wesson Model 544 - chambered in 44-40. It was purchased here on a GunBroker.com auction. The auction description did not say that it was previously owned or that the action had been slicked on a new gun. The single action is competition grade according to my friend and the double action is the smoothest on any S&W revolver I have ever had. Ammunition is not common here but I did get some and we were shooting at 20 yards. A couple of 'X' rings (single action) and nothing out 7's even double action. My friend said he wanted this one I could go buy another one. I told him he should go buy his own.

The Girsan/EAA Model MC14T is a copy of a Beretta tip-up that is no longer produced and is chambered in 380. It was also purchased here on a GunBroker.com auction. The magazine holds 13 rounds and one round goes in the tip-up barrel. This is a nice feature for those of us like me that are finding out racking the slide on semi-autos is becoming more difficult. We were shooting at the same 20 yard distance. The single and double action trigger were not as smooth as the S&W revolver - but certainly acceptable for an out of the box semi-auto. There was no failure to feed or eject any of several brands of FMJ ammo or two different 'defensive' ammo types. Nice group at the 8'0 clock position in the 9's & 8's. I would not hesitate to have this as my everyday carry if it would go in my pocket and not print - the Ruger LCP-II that is my EDC doesn't print - but it has a shorter sight radius and carries only half as much ammunition.

Hopefully there is some information here that my be of interest to some of the forum members.

Best Regards - AQH
