Why in many brick walls do you see maybe every 6th coarse with the bricks being set so the small ends of the bricks are facing outward?

Maybe the decorative effect? Beats me
I think is just done for looks.

Use to deal with a lot of brick layers for office builings and they used term like soldiers, sailors, layers, etc.....not familia with the small end trick, like said maybe for decoration. Watching brick layers use their skills is amazing.

do you want boreing walls
Well, I know that I wouldn’t want anyone “boreing” into my walls!
I've seen this design in many masonry buildings and just never understood it! Didn't know wether it was for appearance or a structural thing. Thanks
I worked as a brick mason's helper one summer, one long, hot summer at a big apartment complex in Atlanta. We were building brick walls 90 feet long and 30 feet high. The bricks were all laid "straight" with no rows laid on end, so evidently the walls are plenty strong with all bricks laid in the straight fashion.
If the wall had to be a certain distance, they may have to insert some short ones so the length comes out right.
