Columbian Mauser Threading Question!

11echo11echo Member Posts: 1,008 ✭✭

I have a 1952 Columbian Mauser action and I have the trigger guard, but not the screws that mount the guard to the action. I have a set of trigger guard screws from a 98 Germany Mauser, but these don't work either for some reason. I know the German Mauser screw thread is 1/4"-22 Whitworth thread. Anybody know if they used some other thread for the trigger guard back then?

Whether it was made by R. Famage or VZ, it should have the guard screw pitch of 1/4-22. Brownells still lists the 1/4-22 tap and dies. I would run the tap through the holes and clean them up and use the German screws.

Yeah, I talked with Brownell, they say that their 1/4"-22 tap is NOT for a Whitworth thread. In fact, they say their tap is UN (uni-national) which means it's a 30-60 Degree thread. So, if I did use that tap it would hog out the threads to an oversized condition, and my German screws would now "wallow" in the same holes. 😕

The actual German tap used was M3.5 x .55 which is next to impossible to find. The 55 degree pitch is close enough to the 60 degree pitch of the Brownells tap.

If using the 1/4-22 gives enough concern, which it shouldn't, try using an original guard screw and dremel out a thread cutter on the lead-in thread. Use some 180 grit lapping compound and run the screw in to clean up the old threads.

Why not simply order the correct screws from Brownells?

Did you ask if they could provide them?
