I can't find a letter on the barrel but the serial # is 3868. When was it made? Thanks

The serial # would indicate 1931 but it is impossible to be sure without the code. If 1931 then Z should be stamped on the left side of the barrel close to the frame. Normally the forend needs to be removed to see the date code. Bob
That's the one thing about big "R" and their date coding, IMO, that can be misleading. They date their guns by a date code on the barrel, that especially on shotguns can easily be changed, but also put a serial number on the receiver for identification, which is different from most other manufacturers.
Model 31s had matching serial numbers on the receiver and barrel.
