Looks like a 4" 66 to me. Has an earlier type box.
GEEZ US how the heck did I miss that? 👁️😷🦆
Ive got one with a shorter barrel, but it looks the same to me?
It is a 686... The 686 has a full underlug. The 66 does not...
4" 686 L Frame
4" 66 K Frame
@William81 nailed it. I've got the "much better looking" blued sibling, the 586 in the safe. Stir, stir.😁 Bob
And what may he be trading for? Are you going to leave us in the dark?
I would be interested in that too, if you don't mind....
Great catch there @William81
I've got an old 6x6 Polaris to trade him. It doesn't run and it was given to me. I need it gone.
Other than the under lug, what are the differences?
686 L Frame ,,
66 K frame
The 686 is heavier and has a beefier (is that a word) frame. The L frame can be a Plus 1 seven shot.
I do not care for this guy but he does sum it up quickly

This is a "newer" production 686, frame mounted firing pin vs hammer mounted firing pin of the older guns, also will most likely have the lock in the frame. Its a round butt grip as well. It's a fine revolver, just not as collectible as the older models.
Thanks, folks.
Open the cylinder and there should be a variation dash after 686 (686-X). Let us know what it is and we can give you more info.
is the 6x6 worth about 700$... I never liked Polaris’ anyway
Bob.......
Gotta agree......since I bought a 6" 586 in the early 1980's. Put a patridge front with Millett target rear sights on. Then replaced the hammer and trigger with the "old" S&W half-inch wide target versions. After some action work, I set the double action function to "stage" with the addition of an eraser tip to the rear surface of the trigger lever. It sure was fun shooting 38 wadcutters at 25 yards.
Later on......I bought the 6" 686.....and similarly modified it......without the eraser. It usually sits at home.......loaded with 2-38 shotshells.....and then 4- 140gr JSP 357Mag rounds.
Yep.......got the L frames covered.......but still like my 8" Python.😎
I'd trade him in a heartbeat.
Yeah, me too. Quick before he changes his mind.
It's a 686-6. Very clean except looks like someone too a sharpie and blacked in the flutes.
Deal done. He's happy, I'm happy. I gave the boot money to the mrs. So she's happy, too.
If you don't like the round butt grips, they make round to square conversions that might fit better. Nice trade.
Good score, you won IMO.
I think you will be happy with it. I often carry a 4" 686 plus when I fish or hike in remote areas....
