It is a 686... The 686 has a full underlug. The 66 does not...

686 L Frame ,,
66 K frame
The 686 is heavier and has a beefier (is that a word) frame. The L frame can be a Plus 1 seven shot.

This is a "newer" production 686, frame mounted firing pin vs hammer mounted firing pin of the older guns, also will most likely have the lock in the frame. Its a round butt grip as well. It's a fine revolver, just not as collectible as the older models.

Gotta agree......since I bought a 6" 586 in the early 1980's. Put a patridge front with Millett target rear sights on. Then replaced the hammer and trigger with the "old" S&W half-inch wide target versions. After some action work, I set the double action function to "stage" with the addition of an eraser tip to the rear surface of the trigger lever. It sure was fun shooting 38 wadcutters at 25 yards.
Later on......I bought the 6" 686.....and similarly modified it......without the eraser. It usually sits at home.......loaded with 2-38 shotshells.....and then 4- 140gr JSP 357Mag rounds.

It's a 686-6. Very clean except looks like someone too a sharpie and blacked in the flutes.

If you don't like the round butt grips, they make round to square conversions that might fit better. Nice trade.

I think you will be happy with it. I often carry a 4" 686 plus when I fish or hike in remote areas....
