So my son realized after rifle season that he would really like a sling on his 1980s made Marlin 336.
I've seen various different type of setups. Some are just leather around the barrel, others have a full mag tube loop, others have a clamp that goes around the mag tube.
What would you all recommend?

Mine clamps on the magazine tube. It's been there over 40 years, so I guess it works pretty good.
I have an inexpensive sling that doesn't need any alterations to your rifle like swivels, etc. It is a nylon camo pattern sling with a nice pad for my shoulder.
Over the years I have used it with rifles and shot guns. There are loops on each end and it adjusts for length. I have a medium sized fanny pack that contains my hunting items. Like flashlight, skinning knife, * wad, caugh drops and all the hunting necessities including this sling. I decide I need a sling, it's right in my pack.
Have had this sling for probably 30 - 35 years and still use it.
My .44mag has the mag tube clamp.
Does yours have two pieces that clamp together or is it one piece that slides over and tightens down?
I also have a tube clamp on all my marlins. Mine are the two piece ones. Had them on there for 40 plus years. They haven't moved or given me any problems. I have climbed the mountain many times with it and done some stuff you shouldn't do with that sling, and they are steady as a rock.
Mine is also a two piece "clamp" type swivel and yes it is rock solid.
