The mention of the chain across the river near West Point in Ray's recent thread triggered memories of the Pineville KY (Chained Rock) area where I spent time on numerous work trips. (This is relatively close to the abode of KenK/84Bravo.) The chain there is not quite the engineering feat of the one near West Point, as it's only 1.5 tons hauled up the mountain by mules in the 1930's, but it's a cool story. You can still hike down to it on one of the trails in Pine Mountain State Park.

I have passed by chain rock many times when younger
we ( mom dad and us kids ) would go to visit relatives in Tennessee no way to count how many times we passed by
. as a kid I was always amazed they had to use a chain to hold it back LOL and always looked up just in case
