M1 rifle SNs

Glancing at the four digit # on the M1 currently for sale at the bottom of whatever you're looking for reminded me of of my ROTC M1 rifle Serial #s back in the 1950s at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis. During my two year stint at that school, I had a couple of M1s. The first was a Springfield with SN 3515680.

The second was a "new" Winchester that we had to clean the Cosmoline from. It was 1173370. How a bunch of teenagers got their new rifles clean enough to pass inspection with all that gunk on them, I don't know.

Talk about retaining useless information... I had memorized them in kind of a sing-song ditty, I guess.

Thanks to all who had to use theirs for real. I passed my stint in Berlin during the early sixties wearing a set of earphones for the ASA.
