Remember Boone's Farm Strawberry wine from the 70s?? Funny story!!

dreherdreher Member Posts: 8,882 ✭✭✭✭

My younger brother was the head of his fraternity house. It wasn't really a fraternity, it was just a place for the football players and wrestlers to live, drink and party on campus without having to live in a dorm.

The way this came to be is a long story perhaps for another time.

My brother is driving back to school and he happens to be driving past a Boone's Farm store with a big sale sign out in front of the store so in goes my brother to see what is on sale.

There it is! A case of Boone's Farm Strawberry wine for $2.00! Dean bought every case they had. He filled up his trunk, filled up his back seat, filled up behind both front seats, filled up his passenger seat and the floor on the passenger side. He even tied down some on his roof.

Dean told me the boys welcomed him like a conquering hero!!🤣 FREE BOOZE!!! YEE HAH!!

They carried 30+ cases up to his room leaving a bunch of cases downstairs so the frat boys could start drinking free wine, all you can drink, free wine!! It don't get no better than that if you are a broke college student. That strawberry wine flowed freely for three days and nights until they had to sober up because 2 a days started on day four!!😁😂

The starting defense and starting offense for the first 3 practices didn't do anything once the sweat started running except barf, barf again and again and then the dry heaves started. The coach was politely put, unhappy.

Spring came and Dean still had 15 cases of Boone's Farm Strawberry wine in his room. All of those frat boys wouldn't drink even if it was free. All that sweet wine gave them a hangover that would not stop. If they even looked at those Boone's Farm wine bottles they would get nauseated. It took Dean all fall and winter to get rid of most of what was left.

When he left school, he left what was left of that Boone's Farm Strawberry wine in his room.

Years later I mentioned Boone's Farm Strawberry wine to him. Dean turned a little green. That sweet strawberry wine had given an entire fraternity the mother of all hangovers!!😂

We used to mix that stuff with ever clear to really give it a kick. When you could only buy one big bottle of wine like a half gallon. The n you bought a pint or fifth of ever clear. Mixed the two together. girls loved it🤣 . Every one got smacked real fast an was enough to go around

I can remember wine and Ever Clear. I can remember the world was spinning, I was spinning. I was on my hands and knees and even the toilet was spinning. I can remember thinking I’m never going to drink again. Was a lot of fun though back then.

I reckon my generation had Cisco. The small bottle "served" 4? Or was it 6? I wonder if they still make that stuff?

I had to drive through East St Louis to get to college every day. Even back then, ESL was a really, really bad place. The winos there made a product they called Robin Hood because they stole the makings from the "rich" grocery stores. They would take any kind of fruit or sweet thing like pastries from the dumpster and make a truly rotgut wine out of it. Packaged it in Mason jars.

One morning, I was commuting home from an early class, driving east with the sun in my eyes. Crested an overpass and just in time saw a ragged guy sitting crosslegged on the dividing line, Mason jar in hand. I missed him, fortunately.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

I spent some of my adolescence getting to know the taste and effects of drinking homemade wine made by a buddy's farmer dad's stash. Only took a couple of experiences and wine was off of my drinking list forever!

    Oh ---Boone's Farm Strawberry Wine!

Last stop out of town, we bought a case of it. We had a small 7ish piece caravan of VW Campers and Vans, headed to North Idaho Farragut State Park Rock Festival. Caravan never made it up there together, but all did make it. Was a very good 3-4 days fun, lots of eye opening memories.!!

I don't think I ever had the chance to try it, but I still have my own kryptonite. Ouzo. Simply typing out the name makes my toes curl and my kidneys palpitate.

Ouzo. Is there a difference in flavor between ouzo and kerosene??

  • Gunnut358Gunnut358 Member Posts: 453 ✭✭✭✭

The original recipe for Ouzo goes something like this: An old grizzled Greek fisherman forgot his supply of water one hot summer day. He got thirsty, dropped some expired gas station licorice into the fuel tank, then distilled it through his chest hair, followed by his socks.

My Dad's stash of shine was one reason I was elected "World's youngest dirty old man" of my graduating class! Mixed with Boone's Farm, it would make drawers fall off!

Growing up around here, all the gals seemed to like Sloe Gin drinks. I guess you could call it Kool Aid with a kick.

when I was 16 yrs old

I worked at a local grocery store I did not drink until I got about 18 and a new set of "friends."

I had access to all the top shelf wine like boons farm M-D 20/20 wild rose ? and similar also at that time 3.2% beer was all 18 year olds could buy but I could buy any thing in the store ( actually most every 16 to 18 year old could as kids worked at the store and checking ID's was never even mentioned and I know at least one high school gal was well know pretty girl Susie was her name her motto get some booze and well get lucky or no booze your out I even witnessed her telling some poor kid that ( no not me ) at the register one night while running it I just smiled at the scared guy and said your IN 😁

another friend had a job cleaning up at a local pub after closing amazing every night he would find a bottle or three of the better stuff like Jack D. and all similar

many a night we would head out to the back roads to have fun and drink 1st thing happened the whiskey bottle lid would go out the window reason no lid not allowed to put the bottle down

so many stories about getting drunk and several about passing out , being young was fun and dangerous

goes with how did we make it this far post

but such post drags back so many memories for me

sad to say all those old buddies have passed on ( may they RIP ) I am the last man standing I guess you could say

  • dreherdreher Member Posts: 8,882 ✭✭✭✭

"Being young was fun and dangerous!" Yup!! And you are so correct this type of behavior goes with the "How did we make it this far??" post.

The terms young and dumb truly are synonomous (sp)!

Ditchrunner, we did the same thing on weekend trail rides. Throw away the bottle cap .whiskey was in the right side saddle bag . Chaser in the left.

Sloe gin and ouzo... man, those bring back memories.

The Sloe Gin Fizz was THE drink back when. College girls doted on 'em. With predictable results.

Later, I heard about and then tried ouzo. I found it to be dangerously pleasant. You have to like licorice to enjoy ouzo - and several other Continental drinks. But I do. Never got blasted on it, but it is quite easy to do so.

Look up Sloe berries and you'll learn many things.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

One bad memory involving boons farm and sloe gin I had just hooked up with a new girlfriend a few months earlier and her older brother turned 21 and OMG the people and booze and smoking substances were endless.

I was drinking little kings remember them then downed a bottle of sloe gin by my self on top all the other stuff and smoking way too much

I was feeling nothing except the entire word was spinning and I recall just wanting it to stop big time heaving up over some straw bales.

I woke up next morning in the field with straw bales surrounding me some what close to the camp fire

But did I learn no 😕 i had to go all out a few more times passed out in a bar/ nightclub who let us all in 16 18 21 did not matter we all lied many times to get in lol

once with our run around gang one of the gals covered my neck with hickeys I passed out came too a few time with her on top of me in our booth the place was really dark and so much gong on no one cared or noticed.

ya lot of fun going to work while they faded away

but gave it all up 45 years ago i may drink a bottle of beer once a month now

Like some of you memories of days and adventures

    I have to add.

Kasey is trophy winner her adventure is award winning i will bet the boy scouts still talk about that night.

  • Gunnut358Gunnut358 Member Posts: 453 ✭✭✭✭

Rocky, I'll admit that I used to love Ouzo, until I made the mistake of getting blasted on it, and it was easy to do so. Oof. Being part Greek, I thought I had an edge. Was I ever wrong.🤣

  • chmechme Member Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭✭

I recall being introduced to Grappa. Still think they had it confused with lighter fluid or JP-4.

And for all recalling Boones Farm, Annie Greensprings and Thunderbird, I only have 3 words for you-

And LF- you were at the Scout Camp at Konahuali. Not too far from the Pali overlook on the road to Kaneohe.

The scouts still talk about that.

I was traveling around Europe, and I went to Greece. Everybody at the outdoor restaurant there on that Greek island was drinking Ouzo. I never heard of it, but I figured "When in Rome do as the Romans do..."

I ordered an Ouzo, had one sip and had to head to the bushes to spit it out. Nasty! Can't stand licorice.

  • notnownotnow Member Posts: 1,851 ✭✭✭

To me ouzo was basically licorice syrup. Barely tolerable for me. There was a Greek girl who brought some back from Greece. It was in an unlabeled stone ware bottle. I was told years later that the original legitimate homemade Greek ouzo usually had a dash of opium added. I could barely manage a tiny sip so I would never have found out.

Hold the Ouzo but please pass me the Baklava! 😋

used to hit the bargain table at the ABC store, almost allways could find some type of fruit flavored vodka or snops for just a few bucks a bottle. Worst time was I got 2 bottles orange snops and bottle of peppermint snops for dollar a bottle. we were haveing a pick up football game that day and it was a bit chilly so they all got dumped into the same big thermas and hauled off to the game. turned out a bunch of the local high school band kids were there and after a lot of mouthing back and forth they went and got friends and we did the same. before the game was over the thermas was empty and the band team ended up with one broken leg and a broken arm and a broken wrist. Needles to say that ended our weekend pickup games on the school field. I doubt any of us felt a thing till the next day when the hangover and the accumulated bumps and bruises kicked in............
