I was watching this
And when ever I see Kurt in that "Mongo" hat I look for it online (yes I look for Mongo hat every now and again). So I found this here https://thelastbestwest.com/shop/cowboy-hats/movie-hats-1970-2000/thing-movie-hat/ and it mentions the material. So what is 20X?

Great movie , now on to Escape from LA
The hat I have no idea what 20x beaver is
Seems the number and "X" are meaningless since there is no uniformity from one maker to another (like "mil-spec"). Some company's 20x isn't the same as another's. 20x isn't even 20% it's all blend until they hit 200x. For something that costs $500 it should be more pure? At least these guys are charging less than another company that's charging $1550. Not even if Kurt wore it in the movie.
Those numbers refer to the amount of beaver fur used in making the felt for the hat. The higher the number, the more beaver fur, the higher the quality of felt.

Wow Neo, that's quite the hat place you posted. I been wanting a new fedora, but those are way out of my price range. Awesome stuff they have though. Looks like you could get about anything you'd want. They will even dirty them up with trail dust for ya. For extra money of course.
I believe it will be a very cold day in an extremely hot place before I'd be found under one of those. A decent Resistol is really more my speed (and budget!).
I have two fedoras. One is a lightweight "Indiana Jones" in brown felt and the other is a heavy wool by Kangol - sadly now no longer available. Great hats. A quick search found a couple of sources, but I can't vouch for quality. Here's one...

Also own two "cowboy" hats, a grey felt and a straw. Don't wear them as much as I used to, mostly because the head rests in cars interfere while driving.
For general wear, look up Tilley hats. Impeccable quality and they even replace them if lost. Honest.

Yep, I can't wear my Filson "tin" hat in the wife's Escape for that reason. BTW thanks for the hat link Rocky.
Some of mine. The middle row are the fedoras...
NeoBlackdog - Yeah I got that but since the 20x differ from company to company and 20x doesn't equate to a standard it's meaningless. Like 20x from Last Best claims 50% and in another company might come to 10% beaver, maybe? Also 20x equaling 50% while 100x equaling 100% is strange math.
Rocky Raab - Kangol? I'd like to see you in a B-Boy stance.
