I'll try this again as I'M a newbe here @ THE FORUM . I'm trying to find out what this old family heirloom is . My Uncles , he worked for NBC Radio in the 40's and NBC TV starting in the mid 50's. He was the head of the sound effects Dept. Before he passed he gave me this H&R .22 . Not really sure what it really is !! The Barrel was cut off at NBC to make it louder said Uncle !! Looking for another but have never seen one with a side lever to release cylinder. Any Ideas folks ?? Have 6 H&R's for fun , all really old ones , really want to get a barrel for this ole girl... P.S. See engraving. Any help will be appreciated...

H&R model 299 with the barrel being shortened might not be.
Google "I really want a 999, explain..." and there is a discussion with info on the various models of 999 Sportsman and predecessors. You may be able to pin it down using this info.
Yea , have tried google for hours , it's the lever that holds the cylinder as part of barrel I never see in gun part sales. One guy told me it was a pre 999 model ??? Beats me though...
Could it have some collector value as a genuine prop gun from the days of radio dramas?
What if you just had a smith recrown the barrel and attach sights?
I have one that says H&R "Sportsman" on left side of 6" barrel and22 LONG RIFLE CTG on right side
serial D6168 R, That lever is different
9 shot same little lever
Gunparts has the H&R 999 schematic showing the cylinder catch
Thanks you guys , brier-49 that's a beauty !! I cant really see your lever (too dark) But That H&R is CLEAN. D26489 is the ser. # on mine. Having a hell of a time finding a new barrel , 8 months now and not close...
Let me start by saying I know nothing about those old guns. I did find this parts set on the auction side. Hope it helps.

I don't know about the extra lever but want to say that the family and media history is great.
