This rifle is driving me crazy. It looks like an M44...but it has 1895 on the receiver, so just what is this thing?
I cannot find a carbine that was made in 1895

Model 1891/59 Carbine: Commonly called "91/59s," the M1891/59s were created by shortening M1891/30 rifles to carbine length, with rear sight numbers partially ground off to reflect reduced range. These rifles are almost clones of the M38 except for the ground off M91/30 rear sight. You have no photos of the rear sight; check it to see if it's been modified. If so, well, there's your answer.
Correction - I looked at your photos once again - the rear sight has indeed been altered in typical 91/59 fashion. The photos are your usual high quality, of course.
I was thinking a 1907 Carbine, but I think the forearm was longer than yours. Long enough that a bayonet wouldn't fit.
Thank you!!!
I swear, the more information I look at when trying to sort things out the harder it is for me to keep my head straight. If I have a little bit of sorting out to do its not too hard to figure things out, after looking at a couple websites with several variants being explained I was plum swimmy headed before I gave up.
