$20.00 to flip burgers. Who needs collage?

I need to drive by McDs to check out their menu. Since I can't afford to eat there at that kind of employee pay. A month or few ago I walked passed their ad for two Big Macs (questionable if they are still "BIG"), two small fries (maybe it was medium) and two small sodas for $18. something?

Be funny if they now have a dress code or maybe made more of a target for armed robbery Samuel L. Jackson style or the Dennis Leary sewer tunnel people.

Where do you reside where burger flippers get paid at $20 the hour? Also I'm 95% certain their wages have nothing to do with the cost of food, if the near-universal increase in prices for everything is any indicator.

I think fast food employees should be paid a decent chunk per hour, anyway. I've seen them work, and have known people who worked those jobs. They work harder per hour than my cushy, better-paying college-degree job butt ever has.

In the old days, restaurants typically budgeted 30% of their sales for hourly wages. So yeah, $20 an hour can have a major impact. Another major hit is energy costs. When you have things like deep fryers, grills, broilers, ice makers and exhaust fans running continuously, they consume a ton of energy. They also generate a lot of heat so HVAC systems run overtime. That adds up, especially in states like California with their high energy costs. Throw in California's high tax rate and the cost of land and I don't know why anyone would open a restaurant there. NotDracon - You must be new here. With 6 posts you are now one of us, one of us, one of us. Anyways I'm a long time California subject and I forget to mention I'm in California when I start complaining or making observations of California.

Our great governor newsom went even loonier by making burger flippers get paid $20.00 minimum. What does he care it's not like it's his money.

As for burger flippers "working" it depends on which joint. Take In-N-Out open to close there is a line and I have no doubt they work. Then take the BK, McDs, Wendy's they definitely have slow times where they can put in their secret in their "secret" sauce.

I don't think $20/hr is that far off. Even MidWest hiring placards are showing nearly that amount. He!! of a deal for someone with moderate skills and within walking/bike riding distance.

FWIW, I pass on Mickey D's unless no other options. Can't remember the last time I went there. Greasy fries, cardboard burger, and watered down soda—where's the interest in that?

  • hillbillehillbille Member Posts: 14,392 ✭✭✭✭

I disagreed with you notdracon, wages have everything to do with the price of production. the owners have to make up the additional money somewhere, either in smaller portions, higher prices, or less employees, or all of above at same time…….

Aren't they all like that? I can't remember the last time me or my wife were at any fast food joint.

If burger flippers can get $20. per hour, good for them but the last few times I tried to go to a fast food place I could not get anyone to take my order,so I left.I refuse to stand in line for 30 minutes to do business with someone that acts like they are doing me a favor to let me in their establishment.

I am with ditch and Walter. Flipping burgers etc was a gig to enter the world of work . It was never intended to be a career unless you worked for a national chain and were smart enough to hit the management track.

I'll cook my burgers in the backyard, pay myself $20 per hour for labor which should cover the cost of meat & supplies so I guess I'll be eating free burgers………😊

Raising the wage to $20 will make CA DEMOCRATs in charge of government feel good, That about it.

Frankly, I am surprised these dumb DEMOCRATs never learn. Every time they raise minimum wages, it has a negative effect on everyone and it hurts the very people it was intended to help[ the worse.

When i was still working, I remember when I could get Mickey D's best meal for $3.99. Oh well, I will just fire up the grill out on the deck and cook my burger. Willie Jr. does not like the smell and smoke inside. ———————Ray

The real minimum wage is $0 and it should be.

I was in a place a while back that had no 'order takers' just a kiosk thing-a-ma-jig on the wall. I played the dumb geezer card and a sweet little gal helped me order my meal.

I kinda think for college graduates $20 per hour for 40 hrs, high school grads $10 for 40 hrs, non graduates, part-timers and students, $5 per hour. Let's give an incentive to advance in society or risk being poor your whole life. The military does this now, either move up in rank or move out, no more 45 yr. old Staff Sgts. anymore with big belly's.

Who gets hit the hardest by a 20.00 per hour paid burger flipper.

The same burger flipper that takes his family out to eat supper.

You can bet your bippie the MC D's, BK, and such ain"t going to eat the extra wage cost hike.

You folks ever sit down and figure how many meals a restaurant has to sell to just pay it's expense?

  • chmechme Member Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭✭

    who needs college?

People that want to buy that $20 kids meal.

  • dunbarboyzdunbarboyz Member Posts: 2,502 ✭✭✭✭

I can live without fast food. Can fast food live without customers?

  • yoshmysteryoshmyster Member Posts: 21,858 ✭✭✭✭

Had a thought. Since we now are shown there is two tier justice system. Having two tier minimum wage is fair? I know California don't care but I just wondered.

I wonder how many people quit their retail jobs to get in on the $20 burger flipping gig?

(The following post is still in the context of McDonald's, specifically)

Mmm, around eight posts and I've already got two with the "Disagrees" pouring in. Doesn't bode well for prospects of meshing in here.

But anyway, I'm reminded of a snippet from the first Bioshock, where a character comments on the newly opened city intended for followers of Ayn Rand-style capitalism: "These sad saps. They come to Rapture thinking they're gonna be captains of industry, but they all forget that somebody's gotta scrub the toilets."

There's always going to be (and I'm saying this as they are perceived by the public) "lesser" jobs that still need to be done, and all labor is respectful. Entry level jobs are still jobs that need to be done by SOMEONE so they should at least pay to the degree a person can depend on it to fulfill basic needs, with the occasional luxury here and there.

So they're paying Californian burger flippers more. And the company is responding by raising prices there, to the degree they're banking on public outcry to change the law in their favor. It's not like McDonald's CAN'T afford to pay their workers more, they just don't want to. Gotta look out for the CEO and shareholders, after all. At least in the US.

You know they pay workers around $22 per hour in Denmark? At the same McDonald's stores? And a combo meal only costs $11 there while the same meal costs $10 in New York? So what're they doing in Europe that we can't do here?

The average income tax in Denmark is 35.5%, with some paying as high as just over 56%. Denmark is a socialist economy (by their own admission). I won't be moving to Denmark any time soon.

Denmark also has free medical care, and it is good medical care. Also free college.

  • firstharmonicfirstharmonic Member Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭

No, it's not free. Look at the income tax rates again. As for that free college, look up how many (maybe that should be "how few") Denmark students are able to avail themselves of their free college system. I checked it out and found out I wouldn't have been able to use that benefit back in the day. Yet somehow I was able to get a four year degree here; even went on to do some post-graduate studies.

What it comes down to is everyone pays for the few. When that happens here we hear lots of complaints, especially - but not only - on this forum.

    For what it's worth:

Fresh from Mickey D's late last night. I was getting tired of whole roast chicken at Shoprite for $7.99 and usually a little over a pound of fresh ground 85% lean hamburger at a little over $5.00. I make three burgers from this.

They made me pull around to the front and wait, and wait, and wait for my meal. Finally it arrived. Here are the figures:

    Quarter pounder no cheese——————$10.29

    1 sm french fries——————$2.69

    1 apple pie —————$1.29

    tax———$1.16

    Total—————-$15.43

Fast food, no way. The fries were raw. The two pieces of burger tasted like they had been cooked at breakfast time and were dried out. They missed the ketchup but I did get a couple tiny pieces of onion.

I may go back next year if i get bored of Shoprites food again, on second thought, I probably will not. If anyone would like to do the math between Shoprite and Mickey D's please be my guest.

Willie Jr. was waiting for me at the door with a sad face but still wiggling his stub. "What took you so long Pa?" I ate about half of the meal and threw the rest in the trash. Would not feed it to a dog. The apple pie was ok. ——————-Ray

Last time I ate at a fast food joint for lunch the wrapper most likely tasted better. Cost close to 12.00.

A local restaurant, family owned, I eat at almost 5 days a week for lunch. I can get the daily special for right at 12.00. All but same as home cooked, I know the cooks and they are good. One meat, 3 veggies, dessert and drink, too much for one person to eat for sure. When I get the special it is always a small portion. Always a good healthy variation of food.

Their salad bar is one of the highest rated in the area.

Today I ordered grilled salmon and a baked sweetater. Excellent.

Did I say they will fix about anything you want to eat if the have the fixin's?

Sure beats the heck out of fast food.

It is obvious that notdracon has never tried to run a business of any kind. It is impossible to stay solvent with a markup of less than about 25% - and in some places that's 50% due to taxes and mandatory social benefits.

Mind you, that's the MINIMUM markup. It generates zero profit.

Oh, and that applies to selling at gun shows, too. Just to bring my comment into topic compliance.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.
