Almost unalived myself Wednesday

Got out in the field finally Sunday, been going back and forth with the corn planter and a Tillage tool called a salford.

Wednesday the field I was at was being spread with fertilizer and my 17 year old son was going to work the ground ahead of me. There was a hydraulic hose that slipped down and needed to be readjusted but was not able to be moved as there were clamps and zip ties hold it too tight. My son couldn't get the zip tie as he was afraid he's cut the hydraulic hose.

So I crawled in to do it. Stupidly I stuck my knife in and put a crazy amount of pressure on it with my right arm while my left was right next to it a stabbed myself to the bone.

I screamed and the conversation went like this.

Me: AAAAAARGH

SON: CRAP, DO I NEED TO GET YOU TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM

ME:(Watching blood start pouring out of my wrist while my whole arm went numb and felt like it was on fire) yeah, probably, when people try to kill themselves I think this is where they do it.

He ran across the field, said he's never ran that fast in his life, to get his pickup to take me to the hospital.

Long story short, I'm fine I think, I can't use my left hand or arm much as I cut a nerve but it'll probably get better. My main doctor this morning wanted to send me to a hand specialist but I talked him into waiting a few days. I think it'll be fine, better a nerve than a tendon.

My wife actually rode with me the last 2 days all day to do the physical labor part of everything so I could keep going. I basically had to steer the tractor and advise haha

Here's my little wound, remember it's not a cut, it's a stab. These were pics from the er.

Wow, close call there. Farm accidents are sudden and quick. Don't ask me how I know. Glad your son was there.

Ouch! I did something similar with a knife where the tendons were actually laid visible, but I'll spare the details. I don't think I would have turned down the hand specialist - but then my insurance covers 100% on accidental injuries within 72 hours.

Keep a pair of side cutters in the tractor tool box. They're great for clipping zip ties.

Hope that heals up with no loss of function or sensation.

    Been there, 1990.

My puncture was a broken hex wrench that severed a nerve. They put me back together and I still have some hypersensitivity in cold weather but fully functional.

Why is it, that we absolutely, every so often, have to do something really stupid??

I have noticed that my stupidity is decreasing with age. You do notice I didn't say I am no longer doing stupid things??😁

    Glad it wasn't worse!!

Way too easy to make a serious mistake. Farming isn't quite as bad as it used to be BUT the danger is still there.

Most equipment has safety shield/guards but many of those end up in the corner of the shed. I/we have to watch Grandson closely. As with many younger folks, he's looking at where he wants to be w/o considering other things that might also occupy that space. He also doesn't pay enough attention to where he places feet and hands relative to where things may move.

I've been farming almost 60 years and still have all my fingers and toes although not all are in OEM condition.

    Wow

I Hope it heals for you but go to the specialist

At least I know i am in good but some what quenstable LOL company

as I use to be a frequent flier to the ER for stitches and hope never again ok wishful thinking

My 2 cents and boring storie

go the specialist one of my box knife injuries many years ago (about 30 or so ) I cut thur my left index finger inside my first joint it looked like a fountain of blood shooting out

local docs that day at ER yep two of them were working and discussing my finger

Suggest i go to a specialist then said well maybe we can repair it ?

before the numbing took place, to sew it back up they poked bunch of nerves with a needle to check for feeling, and their best guess I would be OK

For many years, I had zero feling in that finger I would see blood and know I had hurt it, not a good thing even now. 30 yrs later, sensitivity may be 80 % and agree cold is not my friend

    Go to the specialist

    is moral of my story

my local e.r. used to have pre-printed admission forms for my #1 son, he'd walk in the door and they'd ask how many stiches and where do you want them

Wow, if you DIDN'T cut a tendon stabbing in that spot, that is amazing. Like others said though.... Go to the specialist. If you wait too long, once you realize it hasn't healed, they may not be able to fix it.

    Go to the specialist immediately.

Well, how you doing? Healing up good? Have you seen the specialist?

  • shootuadealshootuadeal Member Posts: 5,291 ✭✭✭✭

    Thanks for asking about me.

Went in to primary Monday for stitch removal. Wasnt alot of improvement so he sent referral to hand surgeon. They called yesterday afternoon and said I could come this morning at 10am. So we drove to fargo for the appointment. Long story short, I cut a nerve but since I still have feeling he doesn't want to do surgery. Said to exercise my hand a bit and ease back into activity. I haven't been moving my hand much, it hurts when I straighten my fingers so I haven't been moving them as I was worried about damaging them further.

He said he couldn't predict how much feeling I'm gonna get back nor when, it can take nerves over a year to heal themselves. My three fingers and hand near those 3 are numb as crap and when I straighten my arm I get a shot of pain like I'm being electrocuted but at least I don't think I'm going to damage anything worse by using it.

Not too bad of a report considering it could've been a lot worse. Heal daily. How about seeing a PT to show you exactly what and how to exercise and what durations? Best wishes for you.

I hope it works out for you

Agree it could have ended do much worse .

Take it slow and follow what they tel you

As I posted I cut a finger real bad years ago and bacic flipped a coin based on the ER doctors (two of them) guessing I didn't Need to go to a specialist

It was years before I gained feelings in it and 40 yrs later still maybe about 80% of my sensitivity and to be careful, i don't cut it and not feel it
