Small towns? Back in horse and buggy times, there was a small town/village every 5-7 miles along the railroad tracks. The reason: that's about the round trip limit of team and wagon transport in a day's travel(and get home before dark). Since vehicle travel became the norm, most of these villages have dwindled to nothing other than a few houses.
