    Yall!!!

There are some preditory lawyers roaming around B'ham and surrounding areas. They will get a handicapped person to "represent" and they are suing businesses on behalf of these handicapped people. It just cost one of my friends over 10K who owned a store that didn't meet the handicapped regulations. His place is a small store, no stairs….only 8 parking spots total, and there are never more than 2 or 3 cars there (when they are busy.) He had to pay a fortune and on top of it "fix" things to meet reglations. It didn't change anything other than a bit of paint on the parking lot. He told me he knew of at least 5 other places they sued. All of them had to pay a fortune and fix things….that didn't really change how a handicapped person would navigate things.

Don't get me wrong….I am all for accessibility and equal rights, but these lawyers are OBVIOUSLY working the system for a quick dollar.

About 20 years ago, Judy needed some minor surgery done at the local hospital. The big recovery room was split into about a dozen individual sections, all curtained off for each patients privacy. After her surgery, she was placed into one of these sections and a nurse came and got me from the waiting room and said "go through this door and your wife is in cubicle 8, just look for the marker - you can't miss it". Sure enough, hanging down from the 12' high ceiling was a 6" plaque with the number for each cubicle. Of course it had both the number 8 that I could read and also had it in Braille. When the Doc came in to release Judy, I asked how many 10' tall blind people they treated and pointed up at the sign. Without hesitation, he replied "none so far, but we're ready for them!" Bob
