So the tranny was acting funny

About last week or so I noticed my tranny in the Caprice was shifting at funny places. Initially getting on to the highway from sitting for 18 hours at about 60/65 miles she'd shift up and I'll feel a slight engagement. Then drive about 15 miles I'll get off the highway and get back to speed I'll feel the engagement at 48 miles. So with 350K miles and I had her from 115K miles I thought the tranny was finally going.

So I added about a quart of ATF to see if that'll make a difference and it did. Maybe I missed it but I'll see if it'll return. I didn't feel the first shift at 60/65 but I definetly didn't feel the 48 since I was watching/waiting for that one. Crazy a quart of ATF makes that much of a difference (if it did).

"So I added about a quart of ATF"

Did the dipstick show it was low? Just adding oil for no apparent reason is nonsensical.

Transmissions can and do shift at different speeds based on engine temperature. The 'control' will hold a lower gear if the engine is 'cold' ( a relative term) than when the engine is at operating temp. I had this happen years ago when the coolant thermostat stuck open preventing the engine from reaching it's 195* normal operating temp.

Silly wabbit. It 's a CAPRICIOUS car.

And yesterday was juneteenth of all things. Now getting back to the TRANSMISSION in your car…… DO NOT let an automatic transmission run low on fluid. The friction material on those clutch discs is pretty much paper thin. If you run the transmission low on oil and cause a clutch to slip, well they don't take much of that. Don't over fill them either. An overfilled transmission can start blowing fluid out the vent when it gets hot. Sometimes when they do that they get a siphon going and disgorge most of the oil. That is bad.

I put a pint of Lucas transmission in my old Nissan when the transmission started being slow to engage when cold.It helped a little on the slow to engage but it shifted much smoother.I had to replace the transmission at 400,000 miles with a junkyard transmission.I flushed the junkyard trans. and filled it with synthetic fluid and installed the largest Hayden transmission cooler that would fit. That was about 150,000 miles ago and everything is still working as it should.

It is was a full quart low, then YES it will absolutely make a huge difference.

the full quart added could have just given the old worn out oil a temporary new lease on life, if so it won't last long, and if the tranny was properly checked for oil level prior to adding , and checked afterwards for level then at least you will have eliminated for the time being a wrecked , burnt up one.

When my 2005 Silverado hit 100000 miles I took it to my friend and mechanic to change the transmission fluid.
He has made a name for himself as a racing transmission builder.
He asked me if I was having trouble with it.
    I said no.
He told me that if he changed the fluid that it would probably shoot craps in 10000 miles.
He turned down cash to tell me this.
I have 250000 miles on it now.

Mobuck  - It was with in the "range" but I added about a quart anyways.

I could understand the first stumble to the highway cold but after 15 minuets the second one no. Besides this started recently and it wasn't my cars normal. It was abby-normal.

Horse Plains Drifter  - After all the miles I put on her I'm way past borrowed time. Unless my tranny is one of those 1 Million Mile Miracle 4L60E. And we all know this is a weak spot for GM.

    buddyb - 400K I'm getting there. I think I would've used a tranny from Auto-Zone or O'Reilly with a "guarantee". Since I do have a second ride I could have the tranny re-built.

Being a Nissan the body has to be Swiss Cheese with 550K miles.

TANK78Z  - I know it wasn't a full quart since she was indicating with in range.

hillbille  - Dude all the states I did want to move to turned into California like a bad franchise. Then they started to out do California. So I might as well stay and save on moving fees. Not like I got much left in the tank. Then again I might be shocked?

So it looks like that add did the fix. Didn't kick at 60/65 cold and at 48. 500K here she comes.

I am SO GLAD you were talking about transmissions.

You were talking about transmissions rather than rather than gender confused idiots rights??
