My left eye sprung a leak.

yoshmysteryoshmyster Member Posts: 21,857 ✭✭✭✭

Woke up on Friday and I thought I got lint or something of that nature in my left eye. Since it didn't hurt or rub out it must be in the eyeball. Basically it looks like a tuft of seaweed that's still anchored. What's next?

So the E.R. told me dethatched retina. Charged me $2200 and kicked me loose with a "referral".

While waiting for the referral call from the place the E.R. told me about but never got. It seems they either didn't get the notification from the E.R. or they lost it. I had a chat with one of the resident where I work at that told me to go to her doctor and I called the hospital to see what was up with the referral. That's when I found out about the cluster fork. I told the social worker to send the referral to the doctor I was recommended. Since I was starting from scratch.

Saw the doctor (Monday) and I was informed I had Macular Edema, Proliferative Retinopathy and Vitreous Hemorrhage. Five visits with "laser" treatments. I'll have to youtube/google those words. It's not as bad as dethatched retina with the fix is long and uncomfortable. While I was visiting the dog I was told her sister's boyfriend just had a dethatched retina procedure where he had to be on his belly for like weeks. I wish I could sleep on my belly but I'll smother myself.

What I was told the cost doesn't seem bad (about $3-$5K). I thought they'd gouge you since this world is for the sighted. I stopped by the local last Friday in preparation to raise funds and to see how the guns were selling. They were well stocked and no panic buying. Then Saturday happened. With their stock being full I doubt I'll move anything before I get the cash. Also being in California the gun will sit 30 days before being shown, so that's another strike against for a fast cash.

Almost forgot I'll have the in and out laser treatment on the 17th.

Wow Yosh, that's not something to mess with. You have insurance through your work, right?? Check with the financial offices at these doctors/hospitals/care providers. Many institutions will write off certain percentages of your bill, up to 100%, depending on your income. Check it out.

There seems to a lot of that c,f. going around in health care. I've dealt with it several times in the last few years

hopefully they will be able to fix you up, I'm dealing with a few issue myself and yes between the VA and Medicare I'm also experiencing the C.F. that happens. Good luck Yosh.

I'd be making a trip back to the ER (probably a worthless trip) asking for a partial refund since they dropped the ball on your care & well being. 😡

Prayers sent Yosh.... Perhaps some s'mores ramen would fix it all 😜

Horse Plains Drifter  - That $3K-$5K is my portion for both eyes. That's about 20% ball park they figure out of my pocket. If it fixes it I have no issue. Unlike my gall bladder removal where I got worse cure.

Junkballer - I bet the E.R. would charge me again for going back.

Later this afternoon I'll be getting "lasered". Then get stuck in rush hour. I think I'll drag out "Austin Powers". You know "laser".

So had the first "laser" treatment. They had an assistant hold my head to the head vice. I wonder how much he gets paid? I could do that if it doesn't require a "medical" training. The doc said it went perfectly and the eye is less blurry now. Still got the seaweed/blood vessel swaying in the eye. I thought this was going to be sucked out but he said the "body" will absorb it. Sounds like I'll have this for life.

I'll have the next treatment on Monday (in four days) on my "good" eye. Which makes me nervous since that one is working. Kind a wish dude finishes one job before moving on. I got this feeling the good eye will be blurry as the bad one. Maybe I'll hang out at the adult "book" store until my eye clears up (traffic, too). Maybe I'll cab it? I'll have to see how my bad eye is on Monday.

So had the third treatment (second for the bad eye) and the octopus (blood) is still there but it's less blurry. The doctor said the treatment is taking well. Going for the second treatment on the right on Monday.

So when I have my eyes open in the dark I see lots of stars. Laser burns on the retina?

Hopefully it is working and you get all your vision back to your normal.

So went to my second follow up (the first one was uneventful) and dude's gonna "laser" the left eye again and there's talk of vitrectomy surgery. That where they immobilize the eye and stick needles in to suck out the goo and debris. I wonder how much of my Christmas Bonus will this eat up? It already derailed a purchase of Leupold 3.5-10 LR/T. Oh well new experience.

No fun, I get a shot in each eye once a month, about $3000 per shot and my cost after insurance is about$35; No fun getting old.

Best wishes Yosh. I would think your eyes are about as good an investment as you could make. Without 'em you won't need that scope.

    Dang. Best wishes for you.

Went in yesterday for the surgeon to have a looksy and figure out my surgery date. It'll be December 18th if I pass my physical. Then I was told I'll be off work for couple of weeks. So I'll have Christmas and New Years off. Didn't even have to use my vaca. I just hope I don't have to lay face down for those weeks.

They were pretty confident it was fixable. We'll see (see what I did there).

  • Ruger4meRuger4me Member, Moderator Posts: 3,784 ******

Hope it goes well for you and the process fixes it. We will have to wait to hear and see if you get through it OK.
