When the transatlantic and trans-Mediterranean slave trades started to collapse in the late 18th and early to mid 19th centuries, suppose the residents of the Barbary States had less foreign income? Suppose they required all those who had been supported by piracy or slave trading to leave in order to prevent a famine? All those who had interbred with captured European sailors had to go somewhere else.
Suppose the US got a break on the British land of the Colonies and the Louisiana Purchase because they secretly agreed to take in the pirates and slave traders and give them a chance to go legit?
What if the nations of Europe goaded the South into a rebellion because those people were starting to return to piracy, then Europe sold them enough guns to get in trouble but not to win?
They still call themselves Utman to this day, which is Arabic for Ottoman. The use of Arabic indicates they were allies or vassals rather than actual Turkish Ottomans. (Sorry, rumi.)
I just hope they re-exported the freedmen instead of using them to alleviate the food shortage at the end of the Civil war.
It is said the Confederate Army was unusually liberal about allowing blacks and persons of mixed ancestry and did not pay them less unlike the Union army. Can it be that besides the less than 1% of slaves who became less than 1% of the Confederate army, they were actually calling North Africans "persons of mixed race?"
