King Rat is based on James Clavell's experiences as a POW at Changi Prison in WW2.
There was one American, played by George Segal in the movie, in a Jap POW camp mostly composed of Brits and Aussie prisoners. The George Segal character was breeding rats and selling the meat to the British officers, who were happy to get the meat. Times were tough in the Japanese POW camp.
