I thought about a 243. It's a sexy round for sure. But so many are. I also thought about the 25-06 and the 270. But there's just something about the 308.

First deer rifle is /was a savage 99 in 308.Killed my first deer ,son used it to kill his first deer. Next to the 06 I consider it one of my most versatile rifles .
In that price range I wouldn't rule out the CVA Cascade the one I have in 30-06 Is less picky about what load it shoots than any other rifle that I have including my Tikka and Weatherby
The butt stock was indeed butt ugly. That's why I stopped bidding on the thing. I knew I'd be in for another few hundred to get a stock that matched the rest of the chassis.

As I have told many people over the years, the .308 is my favorite caliber, for several good reasons. First, you can find the ammo at just about any place that sells ammo. Second, it is a very versatile cartridge, being capable of taking anything from antelope to a grizzly bear (The .308 would not be my first, second, third, or fourth choice for a big bear, but if that's what I have, I'll have to make each shot count). Third, and most important, you can have an entire rifle collection chambered in .308. Almost everyone who makes a bolt action rifle makes one in .308. Semi-auto or pump action hunting rifles, no problem. Assault/combat/whatever you like to call them rifles, there are a lot of good ones to choose from. AR-10, M1A, Garand, H&K 91, FN-FAL, and more. You could have over 100 different rifles, all in that one versatile caliber.
For a zombie apocalypse yes. I reckon you'll run in to this ammo much easily than some boutique oddity. I'd go AR-10 that way you can get a Genesis Arms Gen-12 so you can pop off 12 gauge with that upper swap as long as the lower is a DPMS "style".
With light weight carbon fiber barrels you can get 20+" barrel. Sure the silly barrel will cost nearly as much as the Gen-12 upper. I suppose you may loot one if you come across one?
How much did you pay for it ??? This is a piston gun I take it. I have the Ruger AR the SR556 in 6.8 and that's a piston gun. I didn't even know it was available in 308.

.308, one shot, dead. .223/5.56 30 rounds, maybe a kill.
Have a couple and for some reason cannot stop buying them.
Same deal with 30-06…..
Of course you need one.
don't know why you would want a 308, get a 243, they say it will do 2-3 times what a 308 can do…….

I see what you did, there.
I have all of them, but .308 is my favorite!
Life is short, don't procrastinate.
I've had a .308 or two, but I also have a .30-06. The 308 is slightly less than the .06, so I never warmed up to them.

Of course you can, you're no daisy.
Nah, I really can't. That mismatched butt-stock would have to be replaced and that puts me out of my price range if I bid any higher.

Two words… Rattle can.
Do it!
Whoa,up to 900 now
Wow! Really out of my range at this point.
Probably gonna go with a Weatherby Vanguard or a Tikka T3x now.

It's gonna break a grand. 931 and 15 minute reset a couple times already

The Weatherby used to be made by Howa. I like the Tikka's.
$1126 and going
SOLD
$1176.00
Wow
Man after my own heart right here. To say I am a 10mm fanatic is an understatement. :-)
.It's easy to do, too. You just drill the hole smaller.
Life is WAY too short to live with a gun that ugly!

The real question is: what does NEED have to do with it?
I like the way you think. 😁
