Looking at Amazon/E-bay they run from $90 to $500?? It will be placed under the counter in an opening of 24" X 12". The main use would be to simply reheat food. No need for a fancy crisper type. Any suggestions? Thanks

Make SURE to get one with an inverter. You will be happy you did! They heat WAY more evenly. Also, buy the biggest and highest watt that will fit your space.
ask Yoshy he just went that route…….. though his replacement may have come from goodwill, and has a Ramen noodle setting
We've always had good luck with Frigidaires.

Whirlpool
We just picked up a Toshiba to replace a Frigidaire that was supposed to be the cat's meow. The Toshiba is a way better machine.
We had a Whirlpool put in when we redid our Kitchen. It was toast in less than 3 years. We replaced it with a Samsung. We have been real pleased with it
Our newly built house, in 1985, came with a Sharp Nuke Tool over the range/oven. We've replaced it twice, plus had warranty service on the present one. They all were/are.....Sharp.
Whatever you buy........make sure it has a buzzer "mute" optional function.
BTW.......while still renting, in 1983, we bought a large dual function (microwave AND convection) countertop Sharp...........STILL goin' strong......even after being hauled to many a volleyball tournament, for booster club concession stand use, in the late 1990's.
Hope this helps.
(revised: I lied🤥......they all are/were Sharp microwaves. Guess I had Whirlpool on the brain.......after having to replace the oven bake element.🤯 Sorry about that.🙄)
I second the Inverter type. No hot spots/cold spots.
We gave Son's family a micro wave 10-12 years back. It was the low/mid price range from Home Depot. After a gazillion uses, it's still working fine. Luck is a bigger factor than price.
A backlit keypad would be nice
We have a Whirlpool over our range. It's a good microwave but the built in light that lights the stove top is pitiful. 40 watts out of a tiny bulb. It does have an exhaust fan feature but not an actual hood. And I have to say, over the stove top is a dumb place for a microwave.
Ding and dent outlet of a major local appliance store for me. Last one I bought was 1,200 watts, stainless shell and around $ 100.00.
Were I you, I would look at wattage over size. 1,200 watts fits us best.

AND the 40w bulb burns out quite often.
You can find LED replacement microwave stove top bulbs on-line that last long time. (and price is reasonable)
and as you say
over the stove top is a dumb place for a microwave.
We had a counter top Toshiba that lasted over 20 years. Was heavy like full of lead.
I've tried Samsung and whirlpool over the stove and they both failed within 5 years.
I was expecting the New replacement Whirlpool to last long time. I checked the Whirlpool when it quit and found bad door switches. Has 3 wimpy door switches and all three were worn out. (contacts burned and the plastic brittle) Made in China parts and purposely made to fail soon). All 3 replacement switches cost less than $20. After seeing how cheaply the Whirlpool was made instead of re-installing the whirlpool I installed a Toshiba and sold the whirlpool in a yard sale.
I've had old school Whirlpool appliances that would last forever and could be repaired if they failed. The Maytag repair man that was on TV few years ago is long gone and one of his slogans
“the loneliest man in town” — because the appliances never broke.
I have had great luck with the cheaper ones. Small counter top made by WestBend
Gone through three Whirlpools. The first totally failed after about 2 years. The second stopped the rotating plate from moving. The current one works fine but the digital display has darkened to the point it is impossible to read. No more Whirlpool anything for me.
Mine is a hand me down from pops. A vintage 1980(s) Tappan. No you can't buy mine. If you really want it you'll have to kill me for it. Maybe you'll find a old one online like mine?
You know the light bulb in there never burned out in 40 years?
I bought a Maytag and it failed in 2 or so months. The service man that came out said that it was common with that model and said he had a permanent fix. That was 15 years ago and it's still going strong. I was surprised to see that it didn't have a rotating table but a rectangular on the moved a bit side to side. It works well.
We have been using an Oster 1.1 cf, 1000W since 2013, was cheap, still works well.
