I watched this spider for the past couple of months. She was smaller than a pistol primer the first time I noticed her web on the front porch. I have enjoyed catching insects and feeding her most evenings since then. The last few nights her web has been pretty tattered and she does not react when a moth is tossed into her web. Tonight she was not there so I guess her time has come. She was about 1.25 inches in the last picture I took… Nature always intrigues me…
This pic was taken earlier this week….
She did leave this eggs sac behind. I guess they will be off and going soon..

Just happened to be where it built it but it was huge for such a small spider
They will likely over winter in the egg sac and balloon in the spring on a nice breezy day. Some can balloon up to 600 miles.
Sad story, your "pet" spider died. I like spiders, they are fascinating creatures.
We have an invasion of no-seeums this year so I am really cheering on the spiders.
…and the cycle goes on. May an egg hatch and be even scarier than the last one.
Charlotte's web story
Comes To mind
We have a lot of black widow spiders. I have found that once they establish their location, they are on it all season. So, we remove webs going up in doorways and other places we don't want them. They will eventually find a place suitable for us both. I like to throw grasshoppers into their web. They get to and wrap it so quickly.
You can keep the black widow spiders none around us or other some what dangerous spiders or snakes I like it that way .
I know the reputation and facts of the widow spiders are far apart
I just see No reason to tempt fate and have them close by
But good on you in the handling of them and giving them a pass
Keeping widows out of our rock walls, large agaves, stone house front and assorted places would be a never ending and fruitless effort. We keep them out of the house and places we put our hands and call it close enough.
