I grew up around black bears and have had a couple run-ins with them but never felt uncomfortable about them. The grizzly bears, quite frankly, make me a bit nervous.
Interestingly, black bears are the ones documented to stalk humans as prey, while grizzly encounters are most often random attacks involving cubs (not always). It is a bit hair raising to hunt up a canyon in the snow and when you come back down canyon, finding the tracks of a black bear you never say over your own prints. Not sure I ever want to be anywhere near close to a grizzly.
My sister has a friend in Kalispell that experienced a similar thing. He was out hunting in the snow and made a numerous mile hunt. When he got back near his starting point, and intersected his tracks, there were grizzly prints in them.
I've been out and about during elk season and on recrossing my tracks have seen both cougar and black bear tracks (at different times) . Didn't really bother me, but it did teach me not to ignore what was going on behind me! Hopefully I'll not have to deal with a grizz except on my terms (safely and from a distance) and not under 'surprise!' circumstances.
Dang, think this is the 6th bear I've heard of being put down. They just did a live capture and relocate from a neighborhood close to me this morning.
getting rid of democrats?????????
😉😉
Just a month ago, two mommies and two babies were wacked by DNR in Swannanoa for breaking in to houses. Swannanoa is just on the other side of Asheville, and is 40 miles from here. That DNR would execute the cubs and not take them to some rehab clinic tells you that we have lots of bears here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lots more than we had 20 years ago. Hell I had one in my yard 3 weeks ago 30 feet from the house but the dog chased him off before I could get a pic, dammit!

Camping up in the Idaho Sawtooths with Crit and WhiteClouder, we were finishing up breakfast one morning discussing a Grizz sighting in the area. I reached over and wiped the bacon grease from my hand on Crit's boot. He asks mewhat the hell was I doing?
I told him he could run faster than me, and I was just making sure, he would have the bear's undivided attention. Wally lost a mouthful of coffee. 🤣 The next day were heading home, and about 5miles north of Stanley, and there he was, out in a pasture stalking some Hereford steers. First one I've seen in the wild, and he was big as those steers!
LOL, trap,
Crit is probably the funniest guy I ever met. But I'm kinda doubtful he can run 35 mph. On the other hand, he would be a tasty distraction.
Funny story, Trap. Great to see ya stop by.
Dale, doubt he could run at all now, he's not doing good. Had a stroke about 8-9 months ago. Doc told him he had to quit smoking and drinking, I figured that alone would kill him. Talked to him a few weeks ago, and he's had several small ones. left him real weak, couldn't stay on the phone for more than 10-15 minutes. I told Deb to keep me updated.
HPD, I can read the forums without logging in, and now logging in only takes 2-3 tries, instead of 5-6!
I am really sorry to hear that Trap, he deserves much better.
Sorry to hear about Crit. I never met him in person, but remember when he used to come on the forums.
