A good day with one sad/bad part.....

Headed out today for some recreation. I worked around the yard all day yesterday and it was time to do something more fun... Started the day at the gym for a good workout.

Headed out a little later to go shoot and fish. On the way to the first lake, I was driving along and out of the corner of my eye I saw a huge buck angling toward the highway. He jumped a fence and landed right on the road and a big dump truck nailed him. He flipped around and the car in front of me hit it again. It was in a bad place where you could not stop from the direction I was traveling.

I had to keep going and get around him as there was a hill behind me and a blind curve before that. The poor guy was trying to get up but was too busted up. As I drove by him I was within three feet. What a beautiful buck, suffering and there was nothing I could do for him right then. He was a huge, at least 10pts with some stickers and split brow tines…. The truck that hit him just rolled on. The car pulled over where it could 100 yards up. I was going to try and turn around and go back and relieve his pain. About that time a truck had pulled over on the other side and what appeared to be an LEO stepped out with his gun drawn….so hopefully it was a merciful end.

It was heartbreaking to see him suffer like that…..That bothered me the rest of the day.

Things got better as the day rolled on. Headed on to the lake and tried to get on the range. It was full of guys sighting in their rifles for this weekend. So much for shooting today. Headed down to the lake and caught a couple small bass. The wind came up so I decided to head to a different lake that had more cover around it…

Walked down to this lake and got in the back where there is a lot of downed timber. They were biting and hitting buzz baits and spinnerbaits. Caught another dozen or so. Nothing big, a few in the 14-15" size. Called it day about 30 minutes before sunset and headed out for a drive through the conservation area. Got a few pics of the day below. Stilled bummed about that buck…

Hope you all had a good day….

At least you ( and i) are lucky enough to have the option of putting it out of its pain by legally carrying a firearm

I understand some states you could not even have a gun and some places could get in trouble for dispatching the poor animinal

A for the rest good day for sure

' and some places could get in trouble for dispatching the poor animinal'

Legally, that's the way it is in MO. 'Citizens' aren't supposed to dispatch road struck 'game animals'. I was the 'appointed village constable' in a little 'wide place in the road' town. Neither the bunny cops nor the Sheriff's dept wanted to drive 25-30 miles to shoot an injured deer so they'd call me. Wasn't my most favorite task but I did it out of respect for the animals.

I was relieved to see the LEO headed towards the buck. I wondered if it was legal for me to have taken care of the situation myself.

Only if properly licensed in an 'open season' and using an accepted firearm.

I had a 'badge' (actually just a folded piece of paper in my billfold) and generally used a 22lr or 9mm pistol. It was a judgement call on whether the carcass was worth salvaging. Much easier to give it away than to have to drag it out of sight.

I really hate to hear this about the buck. I don't like to see one go out that way. They deserve better but it happens. Congrats on the fish you caught.

Too bad about the big buck. Someone would have been very happy to bag him later on.

In September 1985 I hit an average 8 point buck west of town. It had its back broken so I shot it with a .380 in the brain. I ran back into town and called the sheriff. He said to go ahead and take it to my farm and he would have a deputy bring a tag out later. I am still waiting for the tag. I salvaged about 90% of the meat.

The sheriff also said that technically I could not legally shoot it, but practically it was the right thing to do. That sheriff always got my vote and, when he retired, he was Iowa's longest serving sheriff.

I just had a thought……. I use game cameras around my hunting area and get excited about seeing a good buck running around my neck of the woods. Saturday there will be some poor guys out there dreaming of this buck running by….

I still feel bad about the way the poor guy went out…
