Totally Confused on the Holster that we bought years ago???

Bought this quality made holster years ago and getting ready to sell a large amount of our different holsters. This one has us really puzzled but mainly from our age, etc. Very tiny barrel area and it appears that a pistol could have no front sight in order to use. Maybe it was for one of those old Stevens Single Shots but having front sight would be a problem. Anyone have any info on this? Looks to be of very nice quality. Thanks

Added a few more pics. It has an approx 1 1/4" opening with an approx. 5/8-3/4" open toe.
For a knife? A fillet knife?
I was also thinking knife. Maybe a single shot barrel cozie? I'd look up JRW in leather work. maybe you'll luck out and see another one like it with a description on use.
What is the dimension of that bottom opening front to back? It sure looks like a Ruger Blackhawk barrel would fit. Over all length is right for a 7-1/2" Blackhawk.
I have an old H&R model 922 that would fit maybe in that holster it looks like. H&R made the model 922 in 2.5, 4, 6 and I believe they even made a 10 inch barreled model.
This is a 6 inch model. Narrow barrel.
I have an H&R Trapper model (later designated 722) w/6" octagon barrel tapered .416"-.440" (the only length in that model) in a holster nearly identical to the one in waltermoe's post. The Hunter model was basically the same but with 10" barrel (the only length). Wallyent's holster picture would accommodate only the barrel of the Hunter which seems unlikely…..
