Is 30 Airrifle enough? For…
Soo Ga has made it legal to shoot large game that reads a deer of any size with an air gun of a minimum of 30 caliber. This is legal to do in the primitive of weapons season. The pellets or more commonly lead swag bullets are What do you think? Is 34 FPE enough?
From Hassan description.
The Model 135 QE Carnivore is the world’s first & only .30 caliber, big bore break barrel air rifle. Equipped with the Vortex gas piston, a QuietEnergy shrouded barrel and the acclaimed Quattro 2-stage adjustable match trigger, you can’t beat the price. Not to mention, the
stunning Turkish walnut stock
features an adjustable Monte Carlo comb and checkering on the grip and forearm for better control and feel. Helping to reduce the felt recoil from the incredible 34 FPE this rifle produces, is our patented
Shock
Absorber System (SAS)
and rubber butt pad. If you’re looking for a big bore air rifle, that won’t break the bank but is
gorgeous and loaded
with phenomenal features, the Mod 135 QE Carnivore is the one!

I checked the 50# box, but they would have to be pretty close. I've shot some bigger calibers than that and still wouldn't shoot past 25 yards. Granted, I only shot produce but they did less damage than a standard velocity .22 short. I do find the patented shock absorber system to help control recoil a bit humorous.😁 Bob
One of the guys at the old farts with guns meet at one of the shops I go to has a 30 Cal that has a cylinder that puts out as much energy as a 32 long. He restricts its use to coyotes and foxes he raises pheasant and quail.
I had a guy told me he kills deer with the same pellet rifle. Bow range and head shots.
This is hard to believe. I have killed over 90 whitetail in Georgia, with a .30-06, .30-30 Marlin, .50 TC Hawken and a .58 Civil War Zouave. I know a little about killing Georgia deer.
You're saying this pellet rifle has 34 foot pounds? That's less than a .22LR, which of course is illegal for deer.
I'm sure that with proper shot placement an air rifle would kill a deer but day in and day out, it is under powered and should not be legal.
Some research
SPEED AND ACCURACY
30 caliber tested by HAM gave a Muzzle Velocity of 898 FPS with 44.75 Grain pellets. As the JSB Exact, Hades and Daystate Rangemasters all had the same weight, that “~900 FPS”velocity applied to all of them. That represented 80 Ft/Lbs of Muzzle Energy.Aug 20, 2021
Arrows have about half the kinetic energy.
the 30 cal , 54 grain would go thru a deers lungs , but not bone
This Hatsan is break barrel. The main hunting guns these days are 50 and 45 air rifle is the PCP.
I have a 25 and it basically is a laser and killer for up to about 50 lbs Fur bearing.
But air is coming as we urbanize ,etc. I guess ga had to get an arbitrary number but for a deer I think more like 45 would be a more ethical choice
CAN and SHOULD have entirely different meanings. Hunting is an imprecise art/task and using inadequate arms is unethical.
I agree that the .45 would be a better choice by quite a margin. One has to be careful comparing arrows to pellets as they deliver their killing power in different ways. A hunting broad head is designed to cut blood vessels in a, by comparison, wide area as they pass through flesh. A sharp broad head facilitates greater penetration than would be expected from a similar weight, blunt by comparison, bullet. Bob
Why use imo something that chances are is really not adequate to do the job correctly? Rather have over than under.
I go to church with a person from the Jump Start program. He cannot legally own a gun as a felon. He gets several deer a year with his crossbow and his air gun.
Using that is going to be a poor choice. If you want to use an air rifle during primitive weapons and gun season, get an Umarex Air Saber:
This will send a broad-head tipped full-size arrow out at over 480 fps. I have killed 20+ deer with mine in VA and GA, with a couple shots past 60 yards. Works great!
"He gets several deer a year with his crossbow and his air gun."
The question is: How many does he 'not get'?
You are putting ideas in my head. My daughter in law lives in Atlanta, 5 miles inside the Perimeter in a suburban neighborhood.
DeKalb County, it is illegal to discharge firearms. I grew up near this neighborhood. Believe me, in 1970 there were no whitetail deer in DeKalb County.
But in the past 20 years, the deer have moved in!
The monster buck of Continental Drive. Monica took this pic with the Iphone from her kitchen window. This buck is 20 yards from the house. Illegal to discharge firearms there, and nobody there has any guns, anyway.
We're going down there for Christmas. Now, if I could get one of these super duper pellet rifles…
Interesting, when I was a kid there wasn't a coyote within 100 miles of Atlanta. Coyotes have also moved in. Every year we go down there at Christmas I see a wanted poster on the telephone pole. MISSING—FLUFFY—BLACK CAT 2 YEARS OLD—MISSING SINCE NOV. 12—
Sorry lady, a coyote ate your cat like an Egg McMuffin. Monica says an indoor/outdoor cat won't last six months.

For a humane kill, you need to be upclose with that very small amount of bullet energy, and have really good shot placement. there are plenty of "hunters" that use crossbows, compound bows, arrow air rifles, and all manor of pistol and rifle that have less than stellar success with any of these, just because they don't practice enough or ever, and only use/shoot their weapon of choice only when hunting.
Just saw the other day, a nice medium buck 6 pointer in the middle of a highway with an arrow sticking a good 18" out of the middle of the top of its back, only minor penatration, dead yes , but how long did the animal suffer to slowly bleed to death, and most likely it was never tracked , anyhow my opinion is, will it kill? yes, with a good chance of a clean kill, No, I really don't think. At least not for a lot of "hunters".
If you want to use an air rifle that will do a good job, get a larger caliber with a heck of a lot more energy, there are plenty of them out there, pricey, but worth it for a successful hunt.
