Was A "Spensive" Trip....

...not in the "usual" way, but the added cost of broken items.
The lake was Lake Athens, nice little Lake about 60 miles S.E. of Dallas. A friend and I decided to grab a day of fishin. I went well before day light, he could not get there before around 8am, so we each took our own boats.
...I put in, fished a few "honey holes", nothing to brag about. I decided to head for my "no fail" hole. This was a cove about 200 or so yds. deep, 75 or so yds. wide, with a creek running down the middle, all the way to the back of the cove. Worms and lizards used here, at the right time, would always get you several fish around 3-5 lbs.
...In half an hr. or so, I had 3 fish between 3-4 lbs., and several more "bumps", but not enough, or too late on my part, for any hook sets. I decided to troll out vs. big motor so I would not * the fish, cause I would be back in 20 min. or less. Got out of the cove, cranked up the big motor and headed to the ramp to see if my "bud" had made it early.
...Tied up to the dock, no sign of my friend, so I decided to stretch my legs. After a few min. of walking, headed back to boat, tied up at the end of the dock. The bow of my KingFisher had a sloped portion to it, and I had not allowed (duh) for the dew that was still falling. When I stepped onto to the bow, I was in the water, after I bounced off the trolling motor that was in the locked position. I swam back to the transom, and climbed in, and headed back to my spot.
...Back at my "no fail" hole, the sun was comming up, so I reached into my shirt pocket for my Ray Ban case. Gone. Lost when I fell in, at the time, $75 bucks, grrr. My spot was hot, I was not. Over the next hr. I had not gotten one fish hooked well enough to get it all the way into the boat, grrr. I had hooked probably a half dozen decent fish, felt like all would go at least 3 lbs. plus, but had not landed a single one, grrr.
...Five min. more and I wanted to ck. to find out WTH my friend was, he knew all my spots, no cell phones then, well there was, but they were in a briefcase, and about $2,000 bucks. I WANT A FISH!
With time running out, I chunked the lizard, one more time, bump, bump, WHAM, I set the hook, and the fight was ON! Felt like a good fish, not fast, but a lot of torque, yes!
...I got him up close, at least 8lbs! Hell YES!! Now I am not too big on nets, seen too many good fish lost because of nets, or the person netting the fish, I'd rather lip 'em. This thought process does not apply to all the fish that have BIG ugly finger mangleing teeth, bass are not among these. I grab the net, fish is "digging" to get deep, away from me and the net, no way!
...Well, yes way, plop he got off before I could net him, GRRR!
Bad hook sets, on a lot of fish, my "biggest" fish at the time, got off, GRRR! BAM, BAM, BAM, went my new Fenwick med/heavy against the top rail along the side of the boat, my one pc. rod was now a three pc. [:D], POS anyway, but still around $70 bucks, back then.
Never before or never since, have I done this, not me...but that felt GOOD!
...I headed to the dock. He had arrived, his boat is in the water, he is standing by the his new INH Travel All, tell you how long ago this was? I tied up the boat, and walked up, ask him why he was late, had a blowout he said. New truck, new tires. Oh well, $50 bucks for the tire. About this time I noticed all the water draining
from his truck, WTH? He had got out to drive his boat off the trailer...and the truck slipped back down the ramp into several ft. of water.
...The truck might have floated away, but the big [:D] poles on the dock stopped it, crunch back gate, & the rear window in said tailgate, and back glass, side of truck, around $1,400 bucks back then. He did not want to file a claim, so he paid out of pocket.
...Ray Bans lost (mine) $75.00
...Rod (mine) $70.00
...Tire (his) $50.00
...Truck Damage (his) $1,400 (aprox)
...crappy one day fishing trip,...priceless...[;)]
