Have you ever caught a fish by hand?

I mean with nothing but your hand?

I did once. Many years ago on a trout stream in Idaho.

I laid down on the grassy bank, and put my arm down in the icy cold water, with my hand open to make an up-side-down "U".

And I didn't move. For a long long time. My arm went numb. Then i felt a fish brush against the palm of my hand.

One rapid forward movement to "catch" the fish behind the gills and arc him up onto the bank. Nice sized Rainbow, too. About 16".

I had braggin' rights that summer!!!

My arm was numb for hours, but that was the best tasting fish a kid ever ate for supper.[:D][:p]

...I know some people that "noodle". Catch BIG catfish with their hands. Find "holes' in bends of a river is good, then they reach in and jam their fist and arm into their mouths, little wild for me. Not big on reaching into holes under water, I can't see into, or under submerged logs, uh-uh.

...Id be the first to pull out a record cottonmouth, that had me, then I'd flail around enough to probably beat to death anybody within my histeracal rampage area...[:0]

My cousin has a lake next to his house that is full of bass, sunfish, and carp. When we were about 11 years old, we decided thatsummer that we would catch the bass with our hands. What we did was grab a handfull of grass and float it on the top of the water. We would then place our hand on top of the grass and dangle our middle finger below the surface of the water and wiggle it. It was a bit freaky when the bass would slowly move towards our finger and disappear underneath the grass "shield". As soon as it bit down, we would hook our finger through it mouth and out it's gill and rip the fish out of the water. I wish I had a tape of us doing this. It was really a sight to see.

...saw a clip on local TV where some guy was doing almost the same thing with this one bass he had in a pond on his place, pretty cool, get your fingers bloody after awhile though, I'd think. Thats when you know you have had a good day fishing, when your thumb is scratched raw from lipping so many bass!

went fishing onetime and took the village idiot along, he was the only one that day "not" fishing with a pole, and the only one to catch a fish, he was crawling along the bank and reached in and pulled out a small bass

My heart was beating so fast and I was so high on adrenaline that I didn't realize that my fingers were pretty scratched up until later that day. The best was when my cousin would scream, "it bit off my finger!" and then hold up his hand with his middle finger folded back at the knuckle.

Late spring time tradition, lots of fun. Old bathtubs and homemade wooden boxes work the best. Fatty flatty and big blue cats really like'em. Those big blues really have a bad attitude when you drag'em out by their bottom jaw. Snakes aren't much problem or I wouldn't partake in the fun.

With my luck I'd probably stick my hand into a Snapping turtle"s mouth.

Some time back I'd fished/dive for abalone. I was always looking to find better ways to do this. One day I saw some Japaneese women crouched down in shallow water "feeling" for abalone and doing OK. They wern't looking, just using their hands. I figure I got to try this. About three minutes into this new fun way to fish abalone I stuck my hand into a morey eel's mouth. He nailed me twice before I got my hand out of the water.

I have grabbed fish with my hands only. Angel Sharks just to do it, some specie of bottom shark/dogfish to see if it would be good cat food, it isn't, lobster for my relatives and friends, and small local species of crabs just to do it.
