Any other surf/big water fisherman?

Where you at?
What's your favorite rig?
Favorite spot?
How 'bout bait?

I'm in Northern California, SF Bay area. Fish the Sacramento Delta quite a bit, and occasionally head up around Bodega or Muir Beach.

My favorite rig is a 10-foot Fenwick Saltstik with a Penn 7500 Spinfisher spooled with 30lb Fireline. I generally use two-hook surf leaders, but in the right spots, I go for a "fishfinder" (sliding sinker) setup.

My favorite (for catching fish, not very scenic or relaxing) is McAvoy point, on Suisun Bay. Gotta stomp a mile through the swamp to get there, but I've caught big striper and under-limit sturgeon there.

As for bait, I swear by grass shrimp and pileworms, but often use livwe bullheads. If nothing else, cut mackerel does the trick.

Not much for the beach these days-mostly off the boats (MA) in NC used a 9 ft rod (unknown-never looked) with an Abu reel, given to me by a friend. Mostly good old Zepco 202 for everything smaller-pinfish, sheepshead ,and smaller snapper.

...Anywhere from Galvaston, south, gulf of course. Surf fish the troughs for Spanish Mackerel, Specks (speckeled trout).

...8' Shimano rod w/a BIG Shimano baitcast reel, have not used it in a few yrs. now, can't recall the mod. 8' Garcia rod, w/Big Garcia spinning reel, same as Shimano, forget the mod.

...Like the guide boats when can get a few together to go after redfish, Ling. Flounder run in mouth of Galvaston Bay.

...Gulf coast of TX. is not rocky at all, sandy, except for the jetties, those are good at times...[;)]

I fish mostly the back water on the wisconsin river in my canoe. Peaceful and quiet as no big motor boats can run that kind of water. Plenty of action away from boat traffic.

At the San Juan Trench (second deepest place in the world's oceans) we fish mostly for Blue Marlin and Mahi-Mahi using IGFA rated 50# or 80# class offshore trolling rods equiped with AFTCO roller guides and aluminum butts, and Penn International reels. Best bait is Ballyhoo hooked through the nose and trolled at seven knots.

Badwrench, can you see Mt. Diablo from your house? My son-in-law does a lot of hiking up there.

    Thanks---Peabo

Next time I'm in the area may look you up, if you don't mind. Don't hold your breath though cause I don't know when that may be. I don't travel that well anymore. You may no longer be in the area by the time I get out there again.

    Thanks---Peabo

Outer Banks, NC. and the Chesapeake Bay, mainly. I live right on the Pasquotank River in n.e. NC, so Bass fishing is a hobby as well. Just don't have enough time to go!!!

Just up your way last summer and checked out the great whites off the South Farallon Islands. Had some great fishing up around Jenner - Bodega Bay was kinda slow when we were there. Ever fish that stretch between Jenner and Ft. Ross (about a Mi off those high cliffs) in the kelp beds?[:D]

Marina, CA (near a place formally known as Fort Ord) Monterey. Surf fish for mostly perch with my 9 foot Ugly Stick with Okuma Spin. Either rigged with single hook with a sliding weight or Christmas tree. I like back of OSH in Sand City (guess what they're famous for). I've been known to use Blood Worm, Sand Crab or Mussles.

I also go to San Luis Resivor for late night Cat Fishing. Chicken Liver is king with a squirt of "juice"

Down here in Central FLorida. Love to run offshore through Port Canaveral looking for dolphin or wahoo, but gassing up a 120 gallon tank hurts the wallet. River fishing for seatrout and reds is always fun, especially with lighter tackle. Worse part about it is that the only time my boat gets wet is when it rains. Seems like you either have the time, or the money. Hard to get both at the same time :)
