Farm pond permission

Got the ok to fish a good little farm pond. Owner said it has bass and bluegill. Ain't been fished in awhile. He said to release bass as he thinks the numbers have dwindled from all the bluegill. I can keep all the bgills I want.
36 years and I don't think I've ever kept a bgill or ate one. Fun to catch but just never looked at them as eatin'.

ya eat em' ?

...oh my...you are in for a treat! Part of the panfish (crappie too) family, LOTS of people will argue it (bluegill/perch) is/are one of the best "eating" fish there is. Fried, with a cornmeal "batter"...mmm, hard to beat.

...Sounds like at least a "two man" job to me!...you lucky dog...[;)]

..."scrappy" little suckers too! I always said that if on the aggregate, that if bluegill/perch grew the size of bass...ther would be perch clubs...and tourney's,...they do put up a fight for their size!

...One pounders and up, are killer fish to catch...and great to eat, most excellent!...[:p]

hey Bloviator last time I went fishing on the private pond I get to fish my buddy was bass fishing with a little 4 inch plastic lizard. I'll be darned if he didn't pull up one heck of a bluegill. Probably weighed 1.25-1.75 heck of a fish.....tasted pretty darn good too. Get the oil hot and the fish filleted ain't much better table fare than bluegill.

The Sunfish family taste SOOOOOOO much better than any Bass ever has or ever will [:D]
Also notice that Big Bass eat Bluegill by the bunchs....... I don't know that I would ever worry about Sunfish taking over a good Bass pond.

My first response to this forum, probably not the last, I like it here.

Endlss..Blue gills, any sunfish of that sort are about as good as it gets unless you have access to Walleyes. I've been chasing them all my life when I want fish to eat. Bass are fun, but throw them back. Eat the pan fish. I promise you won't regret it.

DIRTYRAT has a great idea with the ultralight rig.

Anything and Everything is a hoot on a rig like that.
Since a flyrod, me, and fast moving river water DO NOT get along...that is my favorite rig for trout fishing...[;)]
