The term survived the war. Who created it? Navy I suppose.

Not sure how it's used these days, but the origin was the location where the carriers would hang-out for air operations in North Vietnam. It was about 100 miles east of Danang. Farther south was Dixie Station, where carriers were for operations in South Vietnam. so it would be the navy that started the term.

Yankee Station was any part of the Tonkin that was north of the DMZ that the carrier(s) operated in during flight ops. Run a line from the DMZ out across the Tonkin to the southern tip of Hainan Island and you were pretty much in Yankee Station. They generally stayed way south of the the Chinese mainland and at least 20 miles off the N. Vietnamese coast.
