Veteran or not??

I was a United States Merchant Marine Academy Midshipman during 1971-1975, and was serving onboard U.S. Merchant vessels as a Navy Midshipman during 1972-1974. I was on several vessels that carried ammo and supplies up the river to Vung Tau/and or Saigon Harbor during the Vietnam War. I made six trips up the river during that time, and have the USCG Discharge papers to prove it. I was authorised to wear the Vietnam Service Ribbon thereafter. I graduated and was Commissioned as a Lt JG, USN in 1975.

Would you consider me a Veteran or not?

The ships I was on did come under fire, but we were not combatants, as we had nothing to fire back with...

Reason I ask is that I would like to join the VFW, if allowed.
