My first cousin. He didn't talk much about his combat experience, but I recall one night he mentioned Camp Carroll.

HOOKS, THOMAS R., III, 59, passed away January 13, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. He was a graduate of Woodlawn High School Class of 1967, attended Jefferson State Junior College and Auburn University. Tommy, as he was known, was an Army combat Vietnam War Veteran, serving two tours. He received many prestigious awards from the local chapter and State Council of the Vietnam Veterans of America, serving two terms as President of the local chapter. He was a Life Member of The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 416 in Birmingham, The Screaming Eagles 101st Airborne Division, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, Post 171. He was a member of The American Legion Riders, District 21, Alabama Chapter and 40/8 Voiture 172, Birmingham. Tommy served many years as the coordinator for the National Veteran's Day Parade in Birmingham, winning many awards. He is survived by his mother, Ann P. Hooks of Birmingham; 2 aunts, Francis Gibbs and Henry of Selma and Eva Waldrip and Edward of Trussville; a host of cousins and many, many friends. The viewing will be Tuesday, January 15th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ridout's Trussville Chapel. The Funeral will be held at Mt. Carmel Methodist Church in Perry County, Wednesday January 16th, lying in state from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. Rev. Norman Williams will officiate. Pallbearers will be Randy Lovelady, Mike Campbell, Keith Mizell, Mike Delaney, Donald Perkins, and Jerry Hays. Members of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 416 will act as Honorary Pallbearers.
