"A wink is as good as a nod to a blind horse."
I was between duty stations as a Navy Neuropsychiatric Technician (Hospital Corpsman). At Oak Knoll Naval Hospital for the arrival of the returning POWs and then to NRMC, Camp Pendleton where I served under Dr. D.J. Duckworth LCDR/MC/USN, Chief of Psychiatry and psych evaluater to the Marine POWs returning to the West Coast. Spent my first year as a Psych Tech with a lot of Psychotic Marines back from too much time "in-country".
My story begins in 1968! I was about to graduate from Bellarmine College in Louisville KY. I was flying high and had the world by the tail--Or it had me by the nuts. I knew I was bound for VN, so I did my duty and volunteered for Army OCS-Inf at Ft Benning GA. to see the world! I did! But mostly SE Asia. I took many moonlight walks through the rice paddies. It was so romantic and puncuated with great fireworks displays. Most that I arranged but I admit there were some surprizes. I loved the great excercise that I got and my previous jungle expert training I got really paid off (never saw a jungle). Rice paddy mud seemed to bring out the best in my men! Surprisingly, I NEVER ran into another American unit while I was in the "land of OZ". Only ARVN RF PF PSDF units. I loved the night camp fire sing alongs. [}:)][xx(][}:)][:D]

ETS'ed 14 December 73, sworn in as a cop, Colorado Springs Police Department, on 28 December 73, effective 1 January 74.[:)]
I departed dear old Chu Lai some time in August 1967 to Da Nang to the Phillipines for 3 days and back to sunny MCAS El Toro. It was such a nice feeling to get off of that plane to a place that I had just left from a mere 13-15 months ago. My next and last duty station was MCAS Cherry Point and that was a very rude awakening. At least I survived. Now if I could just get rid of this ringing in my ears before I go crazy...
Was in Corps '72-'76. Never went overseas. Worked com/nav fire cont radar and ecm on F8 and A4's. Spent majority of time training reserves at what used to be NAS Dallas. That base was closed years ago and moved over to Ft. Worth.

By the beginning of 1973 I was out of the Mekong Delta and back aboard my aircraft carrier. I had been spoiled, however, and was never again happy with the "haze gray" Navy. We were on the cruising grounds when the cease-fire was called (February?). I remember a photo-op of several carriers cruising together, taken to commemmorate the cease-fire, but other than mine (USS Oriskany CVA-34) I can't recall which they were.
Later that year, we came home. Left the ship in September; got an early discharge to return to school.
My ear ringing is constant, and now above the level of the television. A co-worker, who has never been to war, doesn't ride motorcycles, or I doubt even cuts his own lawn, has it too. His son is a doctor and has told him that he can't yet be helped. It just has to be ignored. I still keep in touch with him because he has sworn to pass any new tinnitus knowledge along to me. Lot's of people have this, and that one fact has been a comfort to me.
Retired out of HAL3 at Binh Thuy, Mar 72 and went to work for US Customs in the "Grasscatchers", drug interdiction, at NAS North Island as A/C maintenance mech.
Was plucked off the fantail of a DE in Haiphong Harbor escorting minesweepers, spent a week on
the Connie trying to get a ride to Subic but getting farther down the list. They finally flew a bunch of us over to the
New Orleans which was headed to Subic. Got there only to find my ship had had mechanical problems and had
beat us to Subic by three days. Caught a flight out of Clark on a C5A and got back to the states in time for the birth
of my beautiful daughter!!
I was freezing my gonads off above the artic circle building the ALASKA PIPE LINE, even during the summer up there it can get down to -40 in the day with the wind off the artic ocean.Three years up there off and on, but I came home for the last time and bought my new bride a new house and paid cash, 1975, $45.000. Three bed room and garage, fenced yard.[;)]
