VETERANS' BENEFITS INTERNET SOURCES - UPDATED
FEENIX
Member Posts: 10,559 ✭✭✭
Some great information to share with everyone. Below are web-sites found that provide information on Veterans benefits and how to file/ask for them. Accordingly, there are many sites that explain how to obtain books, military/medical records, information and how to appeal a denied claim with the VA. Please pass this information on to every Veteran you know. Nearly 100% of this information is free and available for all veterans, the only catch is: you have to ask for it, because they won't tell you about a specific benefit unless you ask for it. You need to know what questions to ask so the right doors open for you -- and then be ready to have an advocate who is willing to work with and for you, stay in the process, and press for your rights and your best interests.
Eric,
Can you please replace the Veterans Benefit Internet Sources on the the sticky. Unfortunately, none of those links no longer work when they upgraded them. I do not have a new one so I compiled some below. Hope this helps. Thanks.

Thanks for the info RJ...
military SS benefit, they demonstraited on paper that it is
automatically figured in through the IRS records. It requires a trip
to the SS office to for them to show you this, mine was 60 miles
one way. say la vee. [:)]
MANY VETERANS QUALIFY FOR LITTLE-KNOWN
SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT
"Special Extra Earnings for Military Service"
can be added to your Social Security account.
All veterans should take a look at this Social Security benefit to
see if they qualify.
When a veteran applies for SS benefits, they should take their DD-
214 with them. SS then computes the extra benefit and it is added to
the monthly payments. In many cases, the SS office asks for a DD-214
and this benefit is computed automatically. But, not always.
If you are a veteran who is collecting SS and you're not sure
whether you are receiving this benefit, call your local SS office
and ask them to check your account. If you are not getting the
benefit, take your DD-214 to your local SS office and apply. They
will compute your new benefit and you will receive a larger monthly
check plus retroactive benefits computed from the time you started
collecting SS.
Remember, military retirees and government retirees who use military
time to compute "time in service" do not qualify for this benefit.
Social Security information here...
www.ssa.gov/retire2/military.htm
www.vawatchdog.com/07/nf07/nfJAN07/nf011907-10.htm
Note: Change in special military service credits.
In January 2002, Public Law 107-117, the Defense Appropriations Act, stopped the special extra earnings that have been credited to military service personnel. Military service in calendar year 2002 and future years no longer qualifies for these special extra earnings.
YOU DONT NEED A LAWYER FOR YOUR CLAIM - THATS CRAZY. Go talk to the dav or your local vfw benefits counselor officer. Do hire for ssdi claim.
Let me know if I can help you how to communicate with the VA or your physician. Please dont send me ssi numbers files or other personal info. Just stick to the subject to keep you safe.

Mr. Carpenter, I couldn't agree with you LESS. But at least you belong to the CAVC BAR. I've been a Veteran Service Officer since 1998. I've been CEO of an Independent State Veteran's Advocacy Agency in the Mid-West, I've been an Officer of the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers, I've been National Service Director of a "Big 6 VSO" and a member of the CAVC Bar. I got bored and came out of retirement in 2009 and heve been accredited with the VFW, AL, WVDVA, MCL, NACVSO, FRA and others. My assistant and I see about 148 vets a month and our 2012 average annualized awards are over $1.2 million per month. I have as a minimum 360 hours of classroom training and CEUs. I have found a number of things to be true about lawyers in this business.
1. They do not belong in the business below the CAVC level, they just slow the already slow process down
2. Those that do get involved below the CAVC level, for the most part do not give the veteran claim the amounbt of time it deserves because it's not the most lucrative case for the lawyer.
3. When a lawyer gets involved VA locks the file and only the lawyer or the veteran can access the folder. The vet doesn't know what he's looking for and the lawyer is seldom available when the vet calls.
4. The last 5 cases I've seen, lost by lawyers at the BVA level, could have been won by anyone who's knowledgeable about 38 CFR 3, 4 and 14.
Folks if you want REAL veteran issues handled by knowledgable and trained personnel who are also VETERANS, shop the market. Every state and major Veteran Service Organization has an office in the VA Regional Office. Every State DVA has local offices in county seats of major population centers. Most states have a County Veteran Service Officer located in the Court House. The best trained of these, IMHO, are those who belong to the NACVSO. The states with the best CVSO programs, again IMHO, are NJ, OH, MI, IL, FL, NE, NV, and CA. If you need a referral to one feel free to contact me at James dot W dot Doran at wv dot gov[;)]
